CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Winthrop battled through a slow start and stayed within reach into the middle quarters, but Virginia's sustained second-half run pulled the game out of hand in an 88–53 loss Saturday at John Paul Jones Arena.
Amourie Porter led Winthrop with twenty-two points, while
Mya Pierfax and
Cori Lard also reached double figures.
Virginia was paced by Kymora Johnson's perimeter shooting, finishing with twelve made threes as a team.
FIRST QUARTER
- Winthrop's offense never found rhythm early, and Virginia used extra chances on the glass to open the scoring with a tip-in and push the tempo.
- Porter got Winthrop on the board at the line, knocking down two free throws to knot it at two.
- A Winthrop turnover turned into Virginia points in transition, and Johnson's early finishes helped the Cavaliers create separation.
- Winthrop's best look of the quarter came inside when Persais Williams finished a layup off a Pierfax assist with under two minutes left.
- Virginia answered immediately with a pair of threes late, stretching the gap as Winthrop missed several clean looks from the perimeter.

SECOND QUARTER

- Porter stayed aggressive downhill, earning trips to the stripe and keeping Winthrop's scoring steady.
- Pierfax followed with a pull-up jumper and later another three, helping the Eagles slice into the Cavaliers lead.
- Virginia absorbed it with perimeter answers, including a Johnson three and a late push that kept Winthrop from getting it into single digits.
- At halftime, Virginia led 32-22, with Winthrop winning the quarter 16-15 after the slow start.
THIRD QUARTER
