Rachel McCollum and
Sophia Matthews took home Big South Conference weekly awards for the week of Oct. 13, with McCollum earning Setter of the Week honors and Matthews garnering Libero of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
This is McCollum's second setter of the week after earning the weekly award during the week of Sept. 15. As for Matthews, she earns her second career Libero of the Week honors, doing so last year in the week of Nov. 18.
Rachel McCollum racked up a week of career marks, notching a triple-double on Friday against USC Upstate, her second triple-double of the season. In the week of Oct. 13, McCollum totaled 90 assists at a clip of 11.29 per set. McCollum registered 12 kills at a .455 hit percentage, a career-high 56 assists which was also a season-high in all the Big South conference, and finally 19 digs. From the service line, she tied for a team-high four aces, while defensively she collected 30 digs, the third-most on the team and the most by any Big South setter for the week. Her all-around efficiency continued to shine as she averaged 2.63 points per set, the top mark among all setters in the conference.
Sophomore libero
Sophia Matthews anchored the Eagles' back line this week, playing all eight sets and consistently keeping rallies alive with her defensive efforts. She totaled 46 digs across the two matches, tied for the most by any Big South player during the week, and led the conference in digs per set with a 5.75 average. Matthews was a difference maker in Winthrop's win over USC Upstate, tying a weekly high with 31 digs, a total that also ranks as the second-highest single-match mark by any Big South player this season.
