Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop Volleyball looks to build off their 3-0 road sweep of Virginia Tech on Sunday as they travel to Richmond, Va. for a pair of matches this weekend as they compete in the VCU Invitational.
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS LAFAYETTE
This is the first meeting between the programs. Lafayette went 9-15 (5-11 Patriot) in 2023.
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS VCU
This is the third meeting between the two programs. The two teams first met on Sep. 3, 1993 with VCU winning 3-0 and Winthrop winning 3-0 on Aug. 30, 2002. VCU went 17-13 (13-5 A10) in 2023.
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES
- Opening their season in the friendly confines of the Winthrop Coliseum last Friday, Winthrop rallied from a 2-0 deficit but eventually fell to 3-2 to the Virginia Tech Hokies (21-25, 22-25, 25-16, 25-17, 12-15).
- Then playing on the road for the first time this season, the Eagles rebounded from the loss by registering a 3-0 sweep of the Hokies in a re-match (25-20, 25-22, 25-21) Sunday afternoon.
- The Eagles have played 1,804 matches all-time as the program holds a mark of 1,074-730.
- The Eagles are currently in sole possession of the lead in the Big South (1-1), a game ahead of High Point (2-2).
- Winthrop is currently the only program in the Big South so far this season to have defeated a Power Four opponent.
- Avery Jolley was the kill leader for the whole match in Friday's, match, narrowly missing a double double with 19 kills and 8 digs while adding a stuff block. In Sunday's three set win, she again led the team in total kills, while adding a solo block, two assists, two aces, and five digs. She averaged 3.75 points/set on the weekend.
- Paige Bennett notched a double double in her first career start with 11 kills & 17 digs on Friday.
- Sophia Matthews notched double-digit digs in both of her starts at libero. Matthews, passed a 2.65 (4 pt scale, 2.5 on 3 pt scale) across two matches against a Power 4 opponent, leading the Eagles in digs in Sunday's match.
- Maeve Rehmann got her first career start in the sweep victory. She came in off the bench in the first match and had 10 kills, which was third highest overall in the match. She hit .500 in the sweep and her first start including the match-winning kill.
- Giselle Little hit .500 in Friday's match.
- Overall, four freshmen made their debuts this weekend, combining for 3.87 kills per set, 5.75 digs per set, & 4.25 points per set.
- Rachel McCollum led the Eagles in digs in Friday's match.
- Isabella Murray led the Eagles in aces in Sunday's match while Lexie Vick led in blocks.
- Murray is now ninth all-time in Winthrop history in career assists after her 50 assists against the Hokies on Friday. In that match, Murray recorded a double double with 50 assists & 10 digs.
- Murray now has 2,013 career assists.
