Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop Volleyball ends non-conference action this weekend as they head to Statesboro, Ga. to compete in the Bash in the 'Boro Invitational.
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS WESTERN CAROLINA
This is the 22
nd meeting between the programs with Winthrop leading the series, 15-6. The most recent meeting was on Sep. 13, 2016 with Winthrop winning 3-0 in Rock Hill. Winthrop won the first three matches in the series, all in 1971 and all by scores of 2-0. Winthrop has won nine of the last 11 meetings dating back to a 2-0 win in Cullowhee, N.C. on Nov. 15, 1980. Western Carolina went 10-18 (7-9 Southern) in 2023.
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS ALABAMA STATE
This is the first meeting between the two programs. Alabama State went 18-13 (16-0 SWAC) in 2023. Winthrop is 8-1 all-time against the SWAC. The most recent encounter between the Eagles and a SWAC institution in volleyball was Alabama A&M on Sep. 26, 2017, a match the Eagles won 3-0.
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS GEORGIA SOUTHERN
This is the 15
th meeting between the two programs with Winthrop leading the series, 9-5. The two teams first met on Sep. 26, 1987 with the Eagles winning 3-0 on the road on the way to winning the first four matchups. The most recent meeting was on Dec. 1, 2023 in the first round of the NIVC Tournament in Greenville, N.C. with Georgia Southern winning 3-2. Before Georgia Southern's victory last season, Winthrop had won five straight in the series with the last win being a 3-0 count on the road on Sep. 4, 2019. Georgia Southern went 23-9 (10-6 Sun Belt) in 2023, advancing to the third round of the NIVC Tournament.
SEASON HONORS
Isabella Murray-VCU Invitational All-Tournament Team
- Murray passed 100 career blocks and 500 digs
- With this, Murray became the fifth setter in Winthrop history to have 2,000 assists, 100 blocks and 500 digs in her career
- Murray notched another double-double in the sweep of Lafayette with 41 assists and 15 digs while adding in a kill and setting the team to a .336 hitting percentage
Paige Bennett-VCU Invitational All-Tournament Team
- Bennett led the Eagles in kills in both matches with 4.17/set while hitting .277 on the weekend as a 6 rotation outside
- She was also the team's point scoring leader with 4.41 per set
- She added on 10 digs, an ace, 2 assists, and a block assist
Isabella Murray-Big South Setter of the Week-Sep. 2-8
- Murray posted 67 assists (11.17 per set) in addition to 23 digs (3.83 per set) as the Eagles split a pair of matches
- Murray is Winthrop's first ever Big South Setter of the Week recipient (the award was instituted by the Conference starting this season). This is also the first time this season an Eagle has taken home a weekly award
Sophia Matthews-Black and Gold Invitational All-Tournament Team
- Matthews led the Eagles in digs in all three matches, which included a career-best 16 vs. Appalachian State
- Her 16 digs in a three-set match is tied for 4th by any player in the Big South Conference this season
- She also added five assists and two aces
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES
- Winthrop competed at the Black and Gold Invitational last weekend in Boone, N.C
- Winthrop fell 3-0 on consecutive days to Wofford on Thursday and invitational host Appalachian State on Friday before losing 3-1 to Clemson on Saturday
- In the match with Wofford, Murray was the leader in assists for the match with 25 while Matthews led the team in digs with 15
- Following the match with the host Appalachian State, Rachel McCollum surpassed both 100 career kills and digs
- Matthews is currently on a streak of double-digit digs in every match of her career so far
- Matthews averaged 4.5 digs per set on the weekend with a season/career high of 16 in three sets against App State, which was good for 5.3 a set
- Her 16 digs in a three-set match is tied for 4th by any player in the Big South Conference this season. She also added five assists and two aces
- She anchored the team top five defensive performance of digs in a 3-set match (by a Big South team) against Wofford
- Matthews also only committed one reception error in 10 total sets on the weekend
- The Eagles' 39 kills vs. App State is tied for 4th most by a Big South team in three sets this season and the 50 kills against Clemson is 9th most by a Big South team in four sets this season
- Giselle Little's .556 hitting percentage on nine attempts vs. Wofford is the second highest hitting percentage in a three-set match by a Big South player this season
- The Eagles have played 1,809 matches all-time as the program holds a mark of 1,075-734
- Winthrop is currently the only program in the Big South so far this season to have defeated a Power Four opponent
- Avery Jolley leads the team in kills with 65
- Matthews leads the team in digs with 81
- McCollum leads the team in blocks with 15
- Murray leads the team in assists with 232 and aces with eight
- McCollum has 110 career kills, 95 career assists and 112 career digs
- Murray is ninth in school history in assists with 2,174
- Winthrop is third in the conference in assists per set (11.04) and digs per set (15.21)
- Winthrop is fourth in the conference in kills per set (12.38)
- Maeve Rehmann is third in the Big South in hitting percentage with .313 while Jolley is fifth in the Big South in kills per set with 3.10
- Murray leads the conference in assists per set with 9.67
