Boone, N.C. – Winthrop volleyball began the Black and Gold Invitational with falling to Wofford 3-0 (14-25, 19-25, 16-25) Thursday afternoon.

How it Happened
Set 1 | Winthrop trailed 9-5 to begin the day with the initial Eagle points coming off two Terrier errors and a kill each by
Maeve Rehmann,
Avery Jolley and
Rachel McCollum. Wofford increased their lead to 16-6 a few minutes later via a 7-1 run, prompting the Eagles to stop play twice during the run.
Paige Bennett's kill ended the run after the second timeout and an error by Wofford on the next play made it an eight-point game. After a kill by Wofford, the Eagles then went on a mini rally, making it a seven-point affair at 20-13 by scoring five of the next eight points. McCollum's two kills accounted for two of the five Eagle points during the run. Wofford ended the first set by scoring five of the final six points.
Set 2 | Winthrop lead 4-3 early in the second set on kills by Rehmann, Bennett, McCollum and
Karli Shepherd. Wofford went on a 12-2 run to take a 15-6 lead. But it was Winthrop's turn to go on a huge rally, scoring 13 points to Wofford's eight to cut it to four at 23-19. During the scoring binge, Rehmann and
Giselle Little each had three kills. The Terriers then scored the final two points to end the set and go up 2-0 in the match.
Set 3 | Winthrop found themselves down 8-1 to start the third frame before four straight points cut the deficit to four. The four straight points scored by the Eagles were an error by the Terriers, a kill and an ace by
Reece Rhoads and another Rehmann kill. Wofford upped the lead to 14-8 a few plays later only for Winthrop to once again trim the lead in half, 17-14 off a kill each by Shepherd and McCollum and three Terrier mistakes. But the Terriers scored eight of the final 10 points to end the contest.
