Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop Volleyball continues non-conference action as they head to Boone, N.C. to compete in the Black and Gold Invitational.
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS WOFFORD
This is the 16
th meeting between the programs with Winthrop leading the series, 13-2. The most recent meeting was on Aug. 29, 2017 with Wofford winning 3-0 in Rock Hill. Winthrop's last win in the series was on Sep. 14, 2004 in Rock Hill, 3-0. Winthrop won the first 10 matches in the series. The first meeting was a 3-0 Winthrop victory on the road on Sep. 5, 1995. Wofford went 23-8 (11-5 Southern) in 2023, winning their conference tournament vs. Samford in four sets and advancing to the NCAA Tournament First Round, where they fell 3-0 to Kentucky in Lexington.
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS APPALACHIAN STATE
This is the 50
th meeting between the two programs with Appalachian State leading the series, 25-24. The two teams first met in 1971, with Winthrop winning all four matches on the way to winning the first six meetings and 11 of the first 12 meetings. The Eagles have won three of the last four meetings. The most recent meeting was on Sep. 20, 2019 with Winthrop 3-1 in Rock Hill. Appalachian State went 14-15 (4-12 Sun Belt) in 2023.
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS CLEMSON
This is the 42
nd meeting between the two programs with Clemson leading the series, 28-13. The two teams first met on Sep. 28, 1977 with the Eagles winning 2-0 in Rock Hill on the way to winning the first eight matchups. The most recent meeting was on Sep. 7, 2023 with Clemson winning 3-0. Winthrop's last win in the series was a 3-2 count on the road on Sep. 4, 2004. Clemson went 19-14 (8-10 ACC) in 2023, advancing to the third round of the NIVC Tournament.
SEASON HONORS
- Isabella Murray-VCU Invitational All-Tournament Team
- During the weekend, Isabella Murray passed 100 career blocks and 500 digs.
- With this, Murray became the fifth setter in Winthrop history to have 2,000 assists, 100 blocks and 500 digs in her career.
- Murray notched another double-double in the sweep of Lafayette with 41 assists and 15 digs while adding in a kill and setting the team to a .336 hitting percentage.
- Paige Bennett-VCU Invitational All-Tournament Team
- Bennett led the Eagles in kills in both matches this weekend with 4.17/set while hitting .277 on the weekend as a 6 rotation outside.
- She was also the team's point scoring leader with 4.41 per set.
- She added on 10 digs, an ace, 2 assists, and a block assist.
- Isabella Murray-Big South Setter of the Week-Sep. 2-8
- Murray posted 67 assists (11.17 per set) in addition to 23 digs (3.83 per set) as the Eagles split a pair of matches.
- Murray is Winthrop's first ever Big South Setter of the Week recipient (the award was instituted by the Conference starting this season). This is also the first time this season an Eagle has taken home a weekly award.
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES
- Winthrop split two matches at the VCU Invitational this past weekend in Richmond, Va.
- Winthrop swept Lafayette 3-0 on Friday before being swept 3-0 against the host Rams the next day.
- Stevie Henderson and Edie Powell made their Eagle debut vs. Lafayette.
- Lexie Vick and Maeve Rehmann hit .500 and .533 in the match vs. Lafayette, respectively.
- Giselle Little hit .625 in the match vs. VCU.
- Sophia Matthews notched 14 digs in the sweep of Lafayette.
- She averaged 4.67 digs per set in the win, while maintaining the streak of double digit digs in every match of her career so far.
- She added on a kill and four assists in the win, helping the team hit .336. She passed a team leading 2.63 in serve receive, passing over 75% good/perfect in reception.
- Ten Eagles had kills vs. the Leopards.
- The Eagles have played 1,806 matches all-time as the program holds a mark of 1,075-731.
- The Eagles are currently tied for the lead in the Big South (2-2 overall), a game ahead of High Point (3-3).
- Winthrop is currently the only program in the Big South so far this season to have defeated a Power Four opponent.
- Avery Jolley leads the team in kills with 49.
- Rachel McCollum leads the team in digs with 42 and is tied for the team lead in blocks with 8.0 (Vick also has 8.0).
- Murray leads the team in assists with 138 and aces with seven.
- McCollum has 88 career kills, 94 career assists and 95 career digs.
- Winthrop is second in the conference in hitting percentage (.204).
- Winthrop is third in the conference in kills per set (12.57) and assists per set (11.64).
- Rehmann is third in the Big South in hitting percentage with .386 while Jolley is third in the Big South in kills per set with 3.50.
- Murray leads the conference in assists per set with 9.86 and is second in aces per set with 0.50.
