Eagles Fall At Home To South Carolina

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop fell at home to South Carolina by a final score of 15-3 in seven innings, dropping both games of the home-and-home series to the Gamecocks this season. With the loss, Winthrop moves to 16-26-1 overall. This was the final non-conference game of the year for the Eagles.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cole Messina drew a walk with one out in the first, loading the bases for the visiting Gamecocks.
  • On the next two plays, Parker Noland grounded out but brought Austin Brinling in on the play and Kennedy Jones singled to left field to drive in two more runs, making the score 3-0 in favor of South Carolina.
  • On Winthrop's first go at it on offense, Jaylen Hernandez singled to center field with one out to drive in Nicholas Badillo, getting the Eagles on the board.
  • However, South Carolina's Gavin Casas homered to right field with one out in the second to restore their margin to three.
  • In the next inning, Jones hit a two-run shot to left center field with two outs to extend South Carolina's lead to 6-1.
  • Blake Jackson was hit by a pitch with two outs in the top of the fifth, once again loading the bases for the Gamecocks.
  • Casas came home to score on a wild pitch on the next play.
  • With the bases loaded for the Eagles in the bottom of the fourth with two outs, Nate Chronis was hit by a pitch, walking in Hernandez and making the score 7-2 in favor of South Carolina.
  • The Gamecocks made the score 10-2 in the top of the fifth when Noland came home on Talmadge LeCroy's sac bunt and Brinling's two-run RBI double.
  • South Carolina made it a nine-run edge on Jones's sac fly to left field with one out in the sixth, scoring Jackson.
  • Charlie Evans homered to right field with one out in the Eagle half of the sixth.
  • South Carolina answered with home runs in the top of the seventh by Brinling, Ethan Petry and Messina, making the score 15-3.
  • Winthrop loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh after Hernandez drew a walk.
  • Evans struck out and the game ended at the end of the seventh because of a mercy rule.
ON DECK
Winthrop heads to High Point, N.C. this weekend for a three-game Big South series with the conference-leading Panthers. This will be the final Big South road series of the season for the Eagles. The first game will take place on Fri., May 10 at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
