Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop softball split a double-header with league-leading USC Upstate on Friday as it took game one 5-0 before falling 10-6 in the nightcap.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Eagles struck in the bottom of the fourth as Megan Powell singled up the middle to score Paige Rivas from third with two outs
- In the bottom of the fifth inning the Eagles extended their lead to 5-0
- Ansley Lee led off with a single to right center and was sacrificed to second by Peyton Rivas
- Two batters later Paige Rivas hit a high chopper to the left side as Abby Polk fielded it and tried to get Lee at third but the throw was off the mark allowing runners at the corners
- Ashton VanHouse reached on an error on a grounder to short, allowing Lee to score for a 2-0 lead
- Emma Jackson stepped in and took the second pitch she saw over the field in left center for a 3-run shot
- Powell stayed in control in the circle as she allowed just three hits and tossed her second shutout of the season
Game 2
- After a weather delay of three and a half hours the second game got started at 8 p.m.
- Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Abigail Pippen and Emily Stern had back-to-back RBI singles
- Eagles took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third as KaDedra Temple took a 1-1 pitch over the right field fence for a 2-out three-run home run
- Upstate tied the game in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from Taliyah Thomas
- In the top of the fifth the Spartans scored two runs on an error to grab a 5-3 advantage
- Eagles answered right back in the bottom of the fifth as Megan Powell and Reese Basinger came through with RBI singles
- Upstate took advantage of a couple of mistakes in the sixth to push five runs across and take a 10-5 lead
- Lee added another run for the Eagles in the seventh with an RBI single to right center
EXTRA BASES
- The 5-0 win in game one of the doubleheader was the third straight shutout by the Eagles
- It was the first time the Eagles recorded three consecutive shutouts since 2008 when the team recorded seven straight
- Paige Rivas had the only steal for the Eagles on the day as she moved into a tie for 3rd all-time with teammate Ashton VanHouse and Diane Sisley with 67
- Jackson extended her hitting streak in conference play to 14 straight games while Powell pushes hers to 11 straight
ON DECK
These teams will wrap-up the series on Saturday, May 4 with a single game at 2 p.m. There will be a pregame ceremony to recognize the senior class of 2024.
