Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop fell 5-1 to top-seeded USC Upstate, Friday evening in the winner's bracket of the Big South Conference Championship.

WHAT HAPPENED
- The game was originally scheduled at 2 p.m. but was delayed nearly three and a half hours before finally getting underway
- Upstate struck in the bottom of the first as Denver Lauer drew a leadoff walk
- Taliyah Thomas reached on a fielder's choice as the grounder came back to Reese Basinger who turned and immediately threw to second but Lauer just beat the throw
- Celeste Delorenzo singled to center to load the bases and then Alanna Deal was hit by a pitch to bring home Lauer
- Basinger worked out of the bases loaded jam to record three straight outs and keep it to one run
- Upstate added another run in the third inning on an RBI single from Emily Stern
- Eagles got one back in the fourth inning as KaDedra Temple singled to right center with one away
- Megan Powell followed with a single as Temple raced to third to put runners at the corners
- Ashley Wood pinch-ran for Powell and on a strikeout by Basinger, Wood stole second and then Temple stole home to cut the deficit in half
- Upstate responded in the bottom of the fourth with three runs as it was highlighted by a two-run homer from Deal and a 5-1 lead
EXTRA BASES
- Temple's single in the fourth pushed her streak of reaching base to eight straight
- Powell has also reached base safely in eight straight games and has a five-game hitting streak
ON DECK
The Eagles will take on second-seeded Longwood on Saturday, May 11 at 12 p.m. The winner will move on to the championship game which is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday.
