Lacrosse Welcomes Wofford To Town Wednesday Night

Rock Hill, S.C. – Coming off a 19-15 loss at Longwood last Saturday afternoon, the Winthrop women's lacrosse program (1-10, 1-3 Big South) hosts the Terriers of Wofford College on Wednesday afternoon (4-7, 1-2 Big South).

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS WOFFORD
This is the 5th meeting between the Eagles and the Terriers with Winthrop leading the series 3-1. Wofford won the most recent meeting (their first in the series) last season in 2023 by a final score of 15-13 on Apr. 1 in Rock Hill.  The first meeting was on Mar. 22, 2018 with the Eagles winning 20-7 in Rock Hill on the way to winning the first three meetings. Winthrop is looking for their first win in the series since a 20-14 margin in Spartanburg, S.C. on Apr. 23, 2022 and their first home win in the series since the aforementioned 2018 contest.
 
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES
  • Winthrop is coming off a 4-12 (1-8 Big South) record in 2023. The Eagles welcome nine newcomers to the squad and assistant coaches Leigh Olson and Nick Anagnostis. The Eagles also return 22 players, five of whom played in all 16 contests last season.
  • Seniors Ellie Dutton, Grayson McKenzie and Claire Witmer return as Winthrop's top-three offensive pieces, as Dutton and McKenzie both led the Eagles in goals with 25 while Witmer found the back of the net on 21 occasions.
  • Sophomore Scarlet Cifarelli led the Eagles in assists last season with 16. Cifarelli also tacked on 16 goals on 25 shots on goal.
  • The Eagles were ranked eighth in the Big South preseason poll and are in their third season under head coach Kara Concheck. Concheck is Winthrop's third head coach in program history.
  • Winthrop is fifth in the Big South in draw controls per game at 13.18.
  • Dutton leads the Eagles in goals with 18.
  • Cifarelli leads the Eagles in assists with 12.
  • Lexi Johnson leads the Eagles in shots on goal with 26.
  • Madison Mayer leads the Eagles in draw controls with 49. She is also second in the conference in this category.
  • Mayer leads the Eagles in caused turnovers with 11.
  • Emma Calhoun leads the Eagles in groundballs with 24.
LAST TIME OUT
  • Winthrop saw a furious second half comeback at Longwood fall four points short, 19-15, last Saturday afternoon.
  • Dutton led the Eagles with three goals.
  • Scarlet Cifarelli had four assists and three groundballs to lead Winthrop.
  • Claire Witmer had five shots on goal.
  • Eagle reserve goalkeeper Mikaylah Lindsay tied for an individual season-high five saves.
  • Mayer had a season-high 10 draw controls.
  • Both team each had eight assists and saves.
  • The eight assists were a team season-high.
  • The two teams were also even in draw controls, 19-19.
  • Nine different Eagles scored a goal.
