Lacrosse Continues Conference Play At Longwood Saturday Afternoon

Rock Hill, S.C. – Coming off an 20-10 loss at home to High Point Wednesday afternoon, the Winthrop women's lacrosse program (1-9, 1-2 Big South) returns to Virginia, this time to take on the Longwood University Lancers Saturday afternoon (5-6, 3-0 Big South)

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS LONGWOOD
This is the 13th meeting between the Eagles and the Lancers with Winthrop leading the series 8-4. Winthrop won the most recent meeting by a final score of 13-12 on Apr. 29, 2023 in Rock Hill.  The first meeting was on Mar. 13, 2013 with the Lancers winning 14-11 in Farmville on the way to winning the first two meetings. Winthrop got their first win in the series on Apr. 17, 2015 in Farmville by a score of 15-4 and starting with that win, has won eight of the next 10 meetings. This also included a series-high five in a row from 2015-2018.
 
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES
  • Winthrop is coming off a 4-12 (1-8 Big South) record in 2023. The Eagles welcome nine newcomers to the squad and assistant coaches Leigh Olson and Nick Anagnostis. The Eagles also return 22 players, five of whom played in all 16 contests last season.
  • Seniors Ellie Dutton, Grayson McKenzie and Claire Witmer return as Winthrop's top-three offensive pieces, as Dutton and McKenzie both led the Eagles in goals with 25 while Witmer found the back of the net on 21 occasions.
  • Sophomore Scarlet Cifarelli led the Eagles in assists last season with 16. Cifarelli also tacked on 16 goals on 25 shots on goal.
  • The Eagles were ranked eighth in the Big South preseason poll and are in their third season under head coach Kara Concheck. Concheck is Winthrop's third head coach in program history.
  • Winthrop is fifth in the Big South in shot percentage with .421 and leads the conference in woman-up goals per game with 1.70.
  • Dutton leads the Eagles in goals with 15.
  • Dutton and Cifarelli lead the Eagles in assists with eight.
  • Katie Witmer leads the Eagles in shots on goal with 26.
  • Madison Mayer leads the Eagles in draw controls with 39. She is also fourth in the conference in this category.
  • Mayer leads the Eagles in caused turnovers with 10.
  • Emma Calhoun leads the Eagles in groundballs with 24.
LAST TIME OUT
  • Winthrop fell to High Point by a final score of 20-10 at Eagle Field on Wednesday afternoon.
  • Six different Eagles scored.
  • Cifarelli and Witmer each had a hat trick to lead the Eagles in goals.
  • Witmer had four shots on goal to lead Winthrop.
  • Lexi Johnson and Dutton won four draw controls.
