Three Pitchers Combine For No-Hitter In Win Over Cougars

Rock Hill, S.C. – Three pitchers combined for a no-hitter to lead Winthrop softball to a 6-0 victory over the College of Charleston, Tuesday evening at Terry Field.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Megan Powell, Mackenzie Smith and Emmy Cardenas combined on a no-hitter with a total of 11 strikeouts to one walk
  • Eagles jumped out to an early lead, pushing four runs across in the first inning
  • After back-to-back infield singles by Paige Rivas and Ashton VanHouse, they then pulled a double steal to put both runners in scoring position
  • Emma Jackson came through as she doubled down the left field line, scoring both Rivas and VanHouse
  • KaDedra Temple followed with a single and then Megan Powell walked to load the bases
  • Reese Basinger was hit on the first pitch to score Jackson from third for a 3-0 lead
  • The fourth run came across on a sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of Ansley Lee
  • Jackson drove in another run in the second inning as she drove in Paige Rivas from third on a ground out to short

EXTRA BASES
  • This was the first no-hitter by the Eagles since Reese Basinger tossed a perfect game on Mar. 22, 2023 in a 6-0 win over South Carolina State
  • Ashton VanHouse had two stolen bases on the day and moved into a tie for 3rd on the all-time list with 67 (tied Diane Sisley)
  • Paige Rivas also had two stolen bases and is now in one behind VanHouse and Sisley on the all-time list (66)
  • KaDedra Temple was 4-for-4 on the day, her second four-hit game as an Eagle
  • Mackenzie Smith earned the victory in relief as she tossed four innings and recording a career-high six strikeouts

Winthrop will be back in action on Thursday, May 2 at 3 p.m. as it will resume its halted game against Charleston Southern from Apr. 20.
