Lacrosse To Close Out Season At PC Wednesday Afternoon

Rock Hill, S.C. – Coming off a 22-5 loss at Mercer following a week-long break on Saturday afternoon, the Winthrop women's lacrosse program (1-13, 1-6 Big South) travels to Clinton to conclude their 2024 campaign vs. the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College (2-12, 1-5 Big South).

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS PRESBYTERIAN
This is the 14th meeting between the Eagles and the Blue Hose with Winthrop leading the series by a lopsided 12-1 margin. Winthrop has also never lost to the Presbyterian in Clinton (6-0). Presbyterian won the most recent meeting (and their first ever win in the series) last season in 2023 by a final score of 11-10 on Apr. 12 in Rock Hill. The first meeting was on Apr. 1, 2013 with the Eagles winning 21-12 in Clinton on the way to winning the first 12 meetings. The two teams met twice in 2015, 2016 and 2021, all Eagle victories. Winthrop's last win in the series was a 9-7 win in Clinton on Apr. 13, 2022.
 
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES
  • Winthrop is coming off a 4-12 (1-8 Big South) record in 2023. The Eagles welcome nine newcomers to the squad and assistant coaches Leigh Olson and Nick Anagnostis. The Eagles also return 22 players, five of whom played in all 16 contests last season.
  • Seniors Ellie Dutton, Grayson McKenzie and Claire Witmer return as Winthrop's top-three offensive pieces, as Dutton and McKenzie both led the Eagles in goals with 25 while Witmer found the back of the net on 21 occasions.
  • Sophomore Scarlet Cifarelli led the Eagles in assists last season with 16. Cifarelli also tacked on 16 goals on 25 shots on goal.
  • The Eagles were ranked eighth in the Big South preseason poll and are in their third season under head coach Kara Concheck. Concheck is Winthrop's third head coach in program history.
  • Winthrop leads the conference in woman-up goals per game with 1.71.
  • The Eagles are also tied for third in the conference in woman-down goals per game with .07.
  • Winthrop is fourth in the conference in draw controls per game with 13.86.
  • Dutton leads the Eagles in goals with 25.
  • Cifarelli leads the Eagles in assists with 17.
  • Lexi Johnson leads the Eagles in shots on goal with 39.
  • Madison Mayer leads the Eagles in draw controls with 63. She is also fourth in the conference in this category.
  • Mayer leads the Eagles in caused turnovers with 13.
  • Emma Calhoun leads the Eagles in groundballs with 31.
  • She also is fourth in the conference in saves per game with 7.07.
LAST TIME OUT
  • Playing for the first time in a week, Winthrop lost on Saturday afternoon to the Mercer University Bears on the road by a final score of 22-5.
  • Maddy Hodgson saw action in the net for the first time this season, playing the entire fourth quarter and recording a save.
  • The two teams were tied in saves, 7-7.
  • Dutton led the Eagles in goals with a hat trick.
  • Johnson led the Eagles in draw controls with five.
