Ricky Teel's Three-Run Triple In Sixth Inning Gives Winthrop Win Over Davidson

Rock Hill, S.C. Ricky Teel's bases-clearing, three-run triple in the sixth gave Winthrop an 8-7 victory in their lone meeting of the season with Davidson Tuesday night. Winthrop moves to 14-20-1 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Davidson hit back-to-back homers to start the night with one out, putting them ahead 2-0.
  • In the next inning, Thomas homered to center field with one out to extend Davidson's lead to three.
  • Winthrop threatened to get on the board in their half of the inning, putting guys on second and third with two outs but Abe Affholter struck out to end the inning.
  • The Wildcats loaded the bases with one out in the third but Eagle relief pitcher Connor Harris induced two straight fly outs to get out of the jam.  
  • The Eagles rallied for four runs in the bottom of the third, taking a 4-3 lead on Affholter's RBI single.  
  • Winthrop had a chance to extend the lead in the fourth as Charlie Evans would get to third on Jaylen Hernandez's groundout but Harrison Wilson grounded out to end the inning.
  • Colin Lombardo stole third with one out in the fifth to give Winthrop another shot to extend their lead but Davidson retired two of the next three batters to end the threat.
  • In the sixth, Jouras singled to left field with two outs to tie the game.
  • On the play, Calero scored but Douglas was tagged out at home to preserve the tie.
  • The Eagles broke the tie in their half of the inning by scoring four runs, highlighted by a bases clearing triple to right center field by Ricky Teel, scoring three runs on the play and giving the Eagles an 8-4 lead.
  • In the top of the eighth, the visitors cut the lead in half to 8-6 on Douglas's RBI double down the right field line and Jouras's sac fly to left field.
  • Putnam homered to left center field with no one out in the ninth for Davidson.
  • Winthrop held on after that, resulting in Logusch getting his first win on the season.

Winthrop continues Big South play by hitting the road for the second straight weekend, traveling to the North Carolina mountains to face UNC Asheville in a three-game series. The series starts on Friday, Apr. 19 with the first pitch taking place at 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
