Lacrosse Hosts Furman On Senior Day Saturday Afternoon

Rock Hill, S.C. – Coming off a 20-16 loss to Wofford at home on Wednesday afternoon, the Winthrop women's lacrosse program (1-11, 1-4 Big South) hosts the Paladins of Furman University on Saturday afternoon for both Senior Day and the home finale (5-8, 3-1 Big South).

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS FURMAN
This is the 6th meeting between the Eagles and the Paladins with Furman leading the series 4-1. Furman won the most recent meeting last season in 2023 by a final score of 21-4 on Apr. 8 in Greenville, S.C.  The first meeting was on Feb. 21, 2016 with the Eagles winning 15-5 in Rock Hill. Furman has since won the next four meetings, once in 2021, twice in 2022 and the aforementioned game last season. Winthrop is looking for their first win in the series since the 2016 encounter.
 
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES
  • Winthrop is coming off a 4-12 (1-8 Big South) record in 2023. The Eagles welcome nine newcomers to the squad and assistant coaches Leigh Olson and Nick Anagnostis. The Eagles also return 22 players, five of whom played in all 16 contests last season.
  • Seniors Ellie Dutton, Grayson McKenzie and Claire Witmer return as Winthrop's top-three offensive pieces, as Dutton and McKenzie both led the Eagles in goals with 25 while Witmer found the back of the net on 21 occasions.
  • Sophomore Scarlet Cifarelli led the Eagles in assists last season with 16. Cifarelli also tacked on 16 goals on 25 shots on goal.
  • The Eagles were ranked eighth in the Big South preseason poll and are in their third season under head coach Kara Concheck. Concheck is Winthrop's third head coach in program history.
  • Winthrop is fourth in the Big South in draw controls per game at 13.18.
  • Dutton leads the Eagles in goals with 20.
  • Cifarelli leads the Eagles in assists with 14.
  • Lexi Johnson leads the Eagles in shots on goal with 33.
  • Madison Mayer leads the Eagles in draw controls with 56. She is also second in the conference in this category.
  • Mayer leads the Eagles in caused turnovers with 12.
  • Emma Calhoun leads the Eagles in groundballs with 29.
  • Dutton is three points away from 100 in her career.
  • This will be Claire Witmer's 50th career game.
LAST TIME OUT
  • Johnson and Cifarelli combined to score eight goals in a 20-16 loss to Wofford at home on Tuesday afternoon.
  • There were five ties and six lead changes in the first quarter.
  • Winthrop led three times in the first quarter, the only quarter that the Eagles led in the contest.
  • Of Winthrop's five goals in the opening frame, two occurred on the man-up.
  • Six different Eagles scored.
  • Claire Witmer also recorded a hat trick.
  • Winthrop had a season-high in points with 26 and assists with 10.
  • Winthrop had nine saves to Wofford's three.
  • Winthrop won 21 draw controls to Wofford's 19.
  • Dutton led the Eagles in assists with three.
  • Johnson led the Eagles in shots on goal with five.
  • Calhoun led the Eagles in groundballs with five.
  • Johnson and Mayer each won seven draw controls.
