Eagles Split On Opening Day

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop softball opened the 2024 season with a split, earning a 7-1 win over North Carolina A&T before falling 10-1 to North Carolina, Friday evening at Terry Field.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. N.C. A&T
  • Eagles batted around in the first inning as they pushed five runs across
  • Paige Rivas led off with a single to left and then advanced to second on a wild pitch
  • KaDedra Temple and Grayson Buckner drew back-to-back walks to load the bases with one out
  • Megan Powell walked to plate the first run and then Ansley Lee was hit by a pitch for a 2-0 lead
  • Bailey Warren made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly to left
  • Reese Basinger drove a single to center to score Powell and then after the center fielder misplayed the ball Lee raced around third to score for a 5-0 advantage
  • In the bottom of the fourth the Eagles scored two more runs for a 7-0 lead
  • Kaylyn Little made it 6-0 with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to right and Ashton VanHouse singled to third to score Basinger from third to lead 7-0
  • The Aggies did get a run in the sixth inning on an infield single by Jamari Moss
  • Basinger earned the win in the circle as she tossed 5.2 innings allowing no runs on two hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts

North Carolina
  • Tar Heels struck first in the top of the third inning
  • Carsyn Snead reached on a bunt single with one out and then stole second
  • Alex Coleman laid down a bunt single just beating the throw to put runners at the corners
  • Skyler Brooks then singled to short to score Snead for a 1-0 lead
  • Eagles threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the third as they put runners at the corners with one out
  • Emma Jackson drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second by Aspen King
  • Paige Rivas followed with a single up the middle to put runners and first and third
  • Rivas then stole second to put two runners in scoring position
  • VanHouse popped up to third and then KaDedra Temple flied out to deep left to end the threat
  • North Carolina posted six runs in the top of the fourth highlighted by a three-run home run by Carlie Myrtle
  • In the bottom of the 5th Paige Rivas stole second with two outs and the throw was late and off the mark as it went all the way to the fence and Rivas raced around to score

EXTRA BASES
  • Eagles opened the season with a victory for the 7th time in the last eight seasons
  • Ashton VanHouse had two stolen bases to reach 50 in her career, becoming just the 5th Eagle in program history to hit that mark
  • Reese Basinger had her first at-bats since her freshman season and picked up two hits, the first of her career
  • Basinger struck out 10 vs. North Carolina A&T, the 10th time in her career she's struck out 10 or more
