Eagles Fall In Overtime At High Point In Hard Fought Contest

Rock Hill, S.C. – Kasen Harrison scored a career-high 27 points to lead Winthrop men's basketball in its 100-96 overtime loss at High Point, Wednesday evening in Big South Conference action.

  • Abdoulaye Thiam (25 points, 4 rebounds, assist)
  • Kimani Hamilton (19 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, block)
  • Duke Miles (17 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks)

FIRST HALF
  • Juslin Bodo Bodo opened the scoring with a basket at the rim
  • After K.J. Doucet dropped in a floater on the ensuing possession, the Panthers reeled off six straight points for an 8-2 advantage
  • Trailing 11-6 the Eagles went on a 6-0 run to take the lead after Sin"Cere McMahon dropped in a floater
  • The run also included layups from Alex Timmerman and Chase Claxton
  • The game remained tight as the Eagles trailed 23-20 after another basket inside by Claxton
  • A three-pointer from Kimani Hamilton followed by a layup from Titas Sargiunas put the Panthers up eight with 7:30 left in the half
  • A dunk by Doucet with 1:06 left in the half had the Eagles within 36-34, but High Point closed out the half with a 5-0 spurt to lead 41-34 at the break

SECOND HALF
  • Panthers extended the 5-0 spurt to a 10-run to open up a 46-34 lead one minute into the half
  • High Point connected on four triples over the first three minutes and five seconds of the half to open the half on a 14-2 run and lead 55-37
  • Eagles chipped away at the deficit and used an 8-2 run to pull within 13 points with 13:17 remaining
  • Panthers pushed the lead back to 18 points but Winthrop again made it a 13 point contest with 9:52 left after Kasen Harrison scored off the drive
  • After the lead grew to 18 again, Micheal Anumba scored six straight points to get the Eagles within 12 with just under nine minutes remaining
  • A three from Douce made it a 10 point game at 72-62 with 7:50 to play
  • Eagles were within single-digits after a floater from Harrison with 7:29 left
  • A steal by Sargiunas led to a basket inside by Hamilton to push the lead back to double-digits at 74-64
  • After forcing back-to-back turnovers, Harrison buried a three with 3:47 to play as the Eagles were within five points at 76-71
  • The Eagles forced a turnover for the third straight possession for the Panthers, giving them a chance to pull within two or three points
  • Harrison went 1-of-2 at the foul line with 3:23 to play and made it a four point game
  • After Bodo Bodo made two free throws with 2:58 left and then Anumba buried a left wing three to trail 78-75
  • Talford scored inside with 29 seconds to play to pull within 86-84
  • Doucet was fouled on a three with 2.2 seconds to play in the game and knocked down all three to tie the game at 86-86

OVERTIME
  • Kelton Talford scored inside off a dish from Claxton to give the Eagles the early lead in the extra period
  • Two free throws from Nick Johnson gave Winthrop a 90-87 lead at the 4:05 mark
  • A layup by Harrison gave the Eagles a 94-91 advantage, but Trae Benham tied the game as he converted three free throws with 1:11 to play
  • With the game tied at 96-96 the Eagles turned the ball over on an inbound which led to free throws by Duke Miles for a 98-96 lead
  • Doucet put a left wing three for the lead but was just off the mark as High Point held on for the win

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Winthrop finished the game shooting 48 percent and High Point was 50 percent from the floor
  • The Panthers knocked down 14 triples (14-for-29) while the Eagles were 6-of-20
  • The two teams combined for a total of 59 fouls and 86 free throw attempts
  • Winthrop was 30-for-50 from the foul line and High Point was 32-of-36
  • Eagles won the battle on the glass, 38-33, as they had a 17-6 advantage in second-chance points
  • In the paint the Eagles had a big advantage, 48-26
  • Kasen Harrison led all scorers with his career-high 27 points, as he was 10-for-17 shooting

NOTABLES
  • The 50 free throw attempts in the game, tie the program's single-game record which was set on Dec. 30, 2020 at home vs. Campbell
  • This was the fourth straight meeting between Winthrop and High Point that was decided by six or fewer points
  • Kelton Talford's 18 points moved him from 12th to 9th on the all-time scoring list with 1,308 points
  • Talford is the 10th player in program history to reach 1,300 career points
  • Talford also moved into 9th on the all-time rebound list with 650
  • Winthrop has now made 582 free throws on the season, the most in the history of the program as an NCAA D1 member and 3rd all-time

UP NEXT
Winthrop concludes the regular season at home on Saturday, Mar. 2 as it will host Gardner-Webb at 2 p.m. It is "Senior Day" as this year's senior class will be recognized in a pregame ceremony.
