Eagles Split Doubleheader With Toledo

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop split a doubleheader at home with Toledo by final scores of 2-1 (loss in seven innings) and 7-2 (win in nine innings) on Saturday afternoon. With the split, Winthrop moves to 2-5 overall on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • Winthrop struck first to start the first game of the doubleheader.
  • Abe Affholter came home to score on an error by the centerfielder in the bottom of the third.
  • Toledo promptly tied the game in their half of the fourth, as a Wes Parker RBI single to left field brought in Brayden White from second base.
  • Brian Fry hit a homer on the first pitch of the top of the fifth to put the visitors up 2-1.
  • Neither team scored or seriously threatened again.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • Toledo had a chance to take the early lead in the first, but with guys on second and third, JP Wagner flied out to end their first chance.
  • Winthrop faced a similar situation in their half of the first.
  • With Evans at third, Chronis grounded out to end the inning.
  • The visitors scored first in the top of the third as Owen Jackson singled to right center field to drive in Garrett Pike.
  • However, the Eagles struck back in the bottom of the third on Chronis's two-run single to center field.
  • In the next inning, Winthrop doubled their lead on Evans's two-run single to left field.
  • The Eagles had another chance in the sixth to extend their lead but Lombardo was picked off at home when Will Dorrell popped out to third base.
  • Toledo made the score 4-2 in the seventh when Nate Hill doubled to left center field, driving in Trey Wright.
  • But Winthrop put the Rockets away with three runs over the final two innings to account for the final margin of victory in the second game.

Winthrop plays Toledo tomorrow in the series finale at 1:00 p.m.
