Lacrosse Heads To Durham To Face Duke Sunday Afternoon

Rock Hill, S.C. – The Winthrop women's lacrosse program (0-1) hits the road for their second contest of the season, traveling to the campus of Duke University to face the Blue Devils on Sunday, Feb. 18. The contest is set to begin at 2 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS DUKE
This is the first meeting between Winthrop and Duke.
 
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES
Winthrop is coming off a 4-12 (1-8 Big South) record in 2023. The Eagles welcome nine newcomers to the squad and assistant coaches Leigh Olson and Nick Anagnostis. The Eagles also return 22 players, five of whom played in all 16 contests last season.

Seniors Ellie Dutton, Grayson McKenzie and Claire Witmer return as Winthrop's top-three offensive pieces, as Dutton and McKenzie both led the Eagles in goals with 25 while Witmer found the back of the net on 21 occasions.
 
Sophomore Scarlet Cifarelli led the Eagles in assists last season with 16. Cifarelli also tacked on 16 goals on 25 shots on goal.
 
The Eagles were ranked eighth in the Big South preseason poll and are in their third season under head coach Kara Concheck. Concheck is Winthrop's third head coach in program history.
 
Winthrop is 100-95 all-time as a program, the second most wins in overall Big South women's lacrosse history behind High Point's 122.
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • Winthrop opened their 2024 season with a 20-2 loss to the Davidson Wildcats at home on Wednesday night.
  • The visitors scored the first 13 goals of the night.
  • Cifarelli got the Eagles on the board at the 11:38 mark of the third quarter.
  • The Wildcats scored six more goals.
  • Katie Witmer scored Winthrop's second and final tally with 5:40 remaining in the game.
  • Davidson scored one last time to account for the final margin of victory.
  • Winthrop had eight saves to Davidson's five.
  • Winthrop nabbed 12 ground balls to Davidson's 11.
  • Emma Calhoun led the Eagles with three groundballs.
  • Lexi Johnson and Madison Mayer led the Eagles with three draw controls.
