How it Happened

First Quarter | Winthrop led 6-2 at the 6:39 mark with Marissa Gasaway accounted for five of the early six Eagle points. Charlotte answered with five quick points to go up by one a minute later. Neither team then scored for three minutes until a layup by the 49ers put them up three at 9-6 with two minutes to go. Amourie Porter's layup 30 seconds later cut it to one but the home team scored twice more to extend their lead to 13-8 at the end of the frame. Ultimately, after Gasaway's free throw made it 6-2 in favor of the Eagles, Charlotte ended the quarter with an 11-2 run.

Second Quarter | Charlotte scored the first five points of the second quarter to extend their lead to 10 at 18-8 with 8:25 left. Winthrop would hit five free throws over the next two minutes to trim the lead in half and held Charlotte scoreless for four minutes. The 49ers drained a three-pointer with 4:46 remaining to go up by eight but Leonor Paisana immediately answered with one from deep to make it a five-point game again. Both teams then split the last eight points, leaving Charlotte up 25-20 going into the locker room.

Third Quarter | Trailing 27-21 nearly two minutes into the second half, Blessing Okoh's layup at the 7:46 mark cut the margin to four. Charlotte responded with four points in one minute to double their lead to eight but the Eagles went on an 11-3 run to take a one-point lead at 36-35 with 30 seconds left. Paisana and Porter combined to score nine of the 11 points. Nuria Cunill's second chance layup with 30 seconds remaining represented Winthrop's first lead since it was 6-4 in the first quarter. The 49ers hit a layup at the buzzer to regain the lead entering the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter | The Eagles scored the first three points of the fourth quarter to up the lead to 40-37 at the 8:45 mark after a second chance layup by Porter. The 49ers answered by scoring 11 of the next 12 points to go ahead 48-41 with less than three minutes remaining. The home team also held Winthrop scoreless for five minutes. The Eagles would then score five of the next seven points to slice the lead to four with 1:54 left. But that's as close as Winthrop would get as the 49ers scored on a layup and hit a couple of free throws to put the game out of reach.
