Strong Start To 2nd Half Propels Eagles To 82-67 Win Over Little Rock

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop men's basketball used an early second half run to open up a double-digit lead and never looked back as it earned an 82-67 over Little Rock, Saturday afternoon.
 
WINTHROP (2-0, 0-0 Big South) LITTLE ROCK (1-1, 0-0 Ohio Valley)
  • Johnathan Lawson (27 points, 8 rebounds, assist, 2 blocks, 2 steals)
  • Tuongthach Gatket (11 points, 3 rebounds, assist, 4 steals)
  • Jordan Jefferson (11 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, block)

FIRST HALF
  • K.J. Doucet opened the scoring going 1-of-2 at the foul line at the 18:47 mark
  • Little Rock scored the next five points starting with a driving score by Tuongthach Gatkek which was followed with a three by Johnathan Lawson off an Eagle turnover
  • Tai Hamilton scored inside to make it a one possession game and then out of a timeout Paul Jones III found Ryan Jolly in the corner for three and a 6-5 advantage
  • It was 12-12 with 11:12 to play in the half as Logan Duncomb scored on a stick back, but a left wing three from Lawson put Little Rock back in the lead, 15-12
  • Two free throws by Doucet pulled the Eagles within a point at 17-16 with 8:23 to play in the half
  • The Trojans went on a 7-0 run to force a Winthrop timeout with just over seven minutes remaining
  • The run started with two free throws from Lawson and then he buried a three off a turnover
  • Another Eagle turnover led to a basket at the rim by Ante Beljan to complete the run
  • Doucet ended the run with a three, which ignited a 10-0 run by the Eagles as Bryce Baker followed with a right wing three
  • Doucet went 1-for-2 at the line and then connected on another three as Kasen Harrison found him open on the wing as Winthrop led 26-24 at the 4:18 mark
  • Game was tied 26-26 with 2:10 left when the Eagles regained the lead with a 4-0 spurt behind two free throws from Logan Duncomb and basket inside by Kelton Talford as Harrison drove the lane and dished it to Talford for the layup

SECOND HALF
  • Eagles scored the first seven points to build their largest lead of the game at 11 points, 39-28 with 18:19 to play
  • Talford scored inside and then Bryce Baker found Tommy Kamarad in the corner for three to lead by nine
  • Harrison's floater pushed the Eagles in front by double-digits at 39-28
  • A basket inside by Talford off a turnover made it nine straight points to open the half, forcing a timeout by the Trojans
  • After a runner off the glass by Mwani Wilkinson ended the run, Kamarad answered as he fake the defender off his feet and then stepped to the side and buried a three from the right win to lead by 14
  • Eagles continued to keep their foot on the gas and pushed the lead to as big as 23 points with 11:33 remaining in the game after Duncomb hit two free throws
  • Winthrop held a 20 point lead with 8:04 to play when Little Rock scored seven straight points to pull within 63-50 with 6:33 left
  • Little Rock was within 13 points on two more occasions but that was as close as it got

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Eagles finished the game shooting 42 percent from the floor while holding Little Rock to 34 percent
  • Winthrop was 9-of-27 from three while Little Rock finished 8-for-25
  • Eagles were 27-for-42 at the foul line and the Trojans finished 15-of-23
  • The two teams combined for 42 turnovers as the Eagles had 22 and the Trojans had 20
  • Little Rock finished with 16 steals while Winthrop had 14
  • The glass was dominated by Winthrop with a 52-32 advantage
  • Of the 52 boards, 21 of them came on the offensive glass that led to 19 second chance points
  • Doucet led the Eagles with 17 points while Tommy Kamarad and Kasen Harrison had 13 points and Kelton Talford chipped in with 10
  • Talford just nearly missed a double-double as he hauled in a team-high nine boards
  • Johnathan Lawson led all scorers with 27 points and finished with a team-high eight rebounds

  • Little Rock was ranked 23rd in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 preseason poll
  • Eagles are 2-0 for the first time since 2021-22
  • Kasen Harrison matched his career-best with four steals as he was 1-of-seven Eagles with a steal
  • The victory was the program's 799th all-time and Mark Prosser is now one win away from his 100th
  • This win marks the 7th straight home win over a non-conference opponent
  • Talford's nine rebounds gives him 686 in his career, moving him with six rebounds of 5th on the all-time list and 14 rebounds away from becoming the 5th Eagles to ever reach 700 in a career
