How it Happened

First Quarter | Winthrop trailed 7-2 before a 15-0 run gave them a 17-7 lead at the 3:52 mark. Offensively during the run, the Eagles had balanced scoring as six different players scored a basket. Defensively, Winthrop held the Wildcats scoreless for four minutes. Johnson & Wales then scored five of the next seven points to cut the deficit to seven with 2:42 remaining but the Eagles tacked on seven consecutive points to up the margin to 26-12 a minute later. The visitors ended the quarter with a basket and a free throw, making the score 26-15 with Winthrop on top.

Second Quarter | The Eagles outscored the Wildcats 9-6 in the first three minutes of the second quarter. However, nine of those points came after Johnson & Wales scored on a three-pointer to open the frame. The 9-0 run put Winthrop ahead 35-18 before the Wildcats drained a triple to end the run. Eventually Winthrop extended their lead to 26 at 49-23 with 1:26 left after a free throw by Prunelle Mungo. That capped a 14-2 run over a six-minute span in which the Eagles also held the visitors without a field goal over the final 7:25 of the quarter. Winthrop would lead 49-25 at the half.

Third Quarter | The home team burst out of the gates to start the second half, taking an 81-31 lead at the end of the quarter via a 32-6 run. Winthrop again held Johnson & Wales scoreless for three minutes on the defensive end and held them to only two field goals in the stanza. Four of the six points for the Wildcats were on layups.

Fourth Quarter | The Wildcats scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter in a two minute span before the Eagles answered right back with 13 straight points of their own. This put the Eagles ahead 94-38 with 3:34 left in the game. Winthrop also held the visitors scoreless for seven minutes.
