Baker Delivers At The Buzzer To Lift Eagles Over Tribe

Rock Hill, S.C. – Bryce capped off an impressive comeback with a corner three at the buzzer to lift Winthrop to an 86-85 victory over William & Mary, Friday evening in the first game of the Rock Hill Classic.
 
WINTHROP (3-1, 0-0 Big South) WILLIAM & MARY (2-2, 0-0 CAA)
  • Gabe Dorsey (19 points, 3 rebounds, assist)
  • Kyle Frazier (13 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals)
  • Keller Boothby (11 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, steal)

FIRST HALF
  • The Tribe scored first as Chase Lowe knocked down a jumper
  • Eagles reeled off 11 straight points starting with a score off the drive by Kasen Harrison
  • Eagles then forced a turnover and in transition Harrison found K.J. Doucet up for three for a 5-2 lead
  • Doucet followed that with a score at the rim off a turnover and then tipped in his own miss
  • Tommy Kamarad pushed the lead to nine as he capped off the 11-0 run with a short jumper off glass
  • The Tribe ended the run with a three from Kyle Frazier, only to be match by a three from Bryce Baker
  • Ryan Jolley's score at the rim put the Eagles up by double-digits at 16-5 with 15:40 left
  • William & Mary chipped away at the Winthrop lead and it was a three-point game at the 13:48 mark but the Eagles responded
  • Nick Johnson made two free throws and then drilled a three to lead 22-14 with 11:18 on the clock
  • Baker scored inside to make it a 7-0 run and the lead was back to double-digits at 24-14 midway through the half
  • Winthrop led 35-27 with just over five to play in the half when the Tribe outscored the Eagles 16-4 to end the half and lead 46-39 at the break
  • The run was ignited by six straight triples by the Tribe

SECOND HALF
  • The Tribe pushed its lead to 13 points at 53-40 two and half minutes into the half
  • Harrison got the Eagles within six points at the 14:02 mark as he stole the ball and then went the distance to finish for the layup and was fouled
  • Harrison converted the free throw for the three-point play to trail 55-49 with just over 14 minutes to play
  • William & Mary responded with a second-chance three by Gabe Dorsey, but the Eagles came right back with a score off the drive by Baker
  • Winthrop trailed by 12 points at 77-65 when Baker drained a three to get the deficit to single-digits and then cut it to seven with a Kelton Talford basket inside
  • Keller Boothby put the Tribe back up double-figures at 80-70 with 4:32 left with a three
  • Eagles chipped away and were within four points at 81-77 with 2:34 remaining after a Nick Johnson three
  • The Tribe answered with a three from Isaiah Mbeng with 2:30 to play
  • Johnson hit two free throws to pull Winthrop within five points on the next possession and then the Eagles got the defensive stop they needed that led to two more free throws by Johnson to make it a one possession game with 155 remaining
  • Down four points with 13 seconds left Harrison drove the lane and put a shot off the glass that bounced a couple of times on the rim and then was tipped in by Tommy Kamarad with six ticks remaining
  • Eagles fouled William & Mary on the inbound and Kyle Frazier went to the line with five seconds left and missed both free throws
  • Off the second miss Talford boarded the miss, found Harrison as he pushed the ball and found Baker in the corner who pump faked and then put up a three that splashed in at the buzzer for the win

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Eagles finished the game at 45 percent from the floor while William & Mary shot 44 percent
  • The Tribe knocked down 14 threes (45%) while the Eagles ended the evening 8-of-24 behind the arc (33%)
  • The teams combined for 61 free throws as the Eagles were 20-for-31 and the Tribe were 23-for-30
  • Eagles forced 22 turnovers that led to 26 points while committing 11 that led to 15 points for the Tribe
  • William & Mary won the battle on the glass 40-35 while both teams finished with 12 offensive boards
  • Nick Johnson led five Eagles in double-figures with 17 points followed by Baker with 16, Harrison with 15, Talford had 14 and Doucet added 11
  • Dorsey led the Tribe with 19 points and Frazier added 13

NOTABLES
  • This was the first time the Eagles won at the buzzer since Keon Johnson's buzzer beater on Feb. 13, 2016 at Radford in an 86-84 victory
  • This was Mark Prosser's 100th career victory
  • It was also Prosser's 100th game at the helm of the Eagle program
  • Another milestone that was achieved is the victory was the 800th for the program all-time
  • With the victory the Eagles also reached their 400th home victory all-time
  • Talford had six rebounds in the game, giving him 695 in his career as he moves into 5th on the program's all-time list

Winthrop will take on Georgia Southern on day two of the Rock Hill Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. inside the Rock Hill Sports & Event Center.
