Eagles Fall At Gardner-Webb Wednesday Evening

Boiling Springs, N.C. –  Winthrop women's soccer concluded the 2024 regular season Wednesday evening with a 2-0 loss at Gardner-Webb, in a Big South Conference matchup.

Game Recap
  • Gardner-Webb grabbed the lead just before the half as Mia Vrataric tried to tip away a free kick by Lea Gossett that was in the upper half of frame but the ball was too high and couldn't get enough of her hands on it to keep it from finding the back of the net
  • Runnin' Bulldogs got a fortunate bounce as a Vrataric deflected a cross high and toward the back post
  • After a defender was unable to clear, Lily Stegall ran on and cracked a shot that was block
  • The deflection went back to Stegall as she dribbled and then fired a shot into the top part of the net for a 2-0 lead
  • Monssi Avila-Gutierrez found herself with a free look from the middle of the field about 25-30 yards out but her effort sailed high and wide right of the goal
  • In the 78th minute, the Eagles headed on a service to the top of the box as Sadie Guest was open a the backside of the crowd and struck the ball first time but the effort was wide left of the post
  • In the 80th minute Avila-Gutierrez found herself in open space inside the box to the right of goal and fired a shot to the lower left corner but a defender was there to clear the ball off the line

  • Gardner-Webb finished with a 19-16 advantage in total shots and 8-5 in shots on goal
  • Vrataric finished the game with six saves while her counterpart Stephanie Liu had five
