Winthrop Aims To Get Back In Win Column At High Point Saturday Night

Rock Hill, S.C. – Coming off a home loss to Charleston Southern by a final score of 63-54 on Wednesday night that snapped a two-game win streak, Winthrop women's basketball (9-11, 3-4 Big South) looks to bounce back by traveling to the Furniture Capital of the World for a matchup with the pre-season favorite High Point Panthers on Wednesday night.

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS HIGH POINT
This is the 59th meeting between the Eagles and the Panthers with High Point leading the series, 36-22. The Panthers won both meetings last year. The first meeting between the two teams was on Feb. 14, 1970, with Winthrop winning 62-59 at home on the way to winning 10 of the first 14 meetings. High Point has totally dominated the series since 2003, winning 32 of the last 44 matchups, including an eight-game win streak from 2016-2019 and are currently on a seven-game win streak vs. the Eagles dating back to 2020. Winthrop's longest streak of wins during this stretch was four from 2007-2009. Winthrop will be seeking their first win vs. the Panthers since a 69-63 result on Dec. 31, 2019 at home. Winthrop will also be looking for their first road win in the series since a 79-72 score on Dec. 14, 2013. High Point went 17-15 (13-5 Big South) in 2022-23, falling in the championship game of the conference tournament at the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte to Gardner-Webb 74-61 on Mar. 5. The Panthers earned a bit to the WNIT, falling 66-46 on the road in the first round to the Clemson Tigers on Mar. 16.

  • Opened the week with a career-high 20 points and 16 rebounds in an overtime setback to UNC Wilmington, her second double-double of the season.
  • Nearly notched another double-double against Queens as she finished with 19 points and nine rebounds.
  • She shot 50.0 percent from the floor (13-of-16) and 13-of-17 from the free throw line (76.5 percent) for the week.

LOOKING AHEAD
After a week off, Winthrop hosts UNC Asheville on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 2:00 p.m. on ESPN+. Winthrop will be seeking a regular-season sweep of the Bulldogs, after a 70-64 win in overtime on Jan. 17 on the road.
