Winthrop Defeats UNC Asheville On The Road In Overtime

Asheville, N.C. – Winthrop snapped their three-game losing streak by rallying to win at archrival UNC Asheville in overtime by a final score of 70-64 on Wednesday night.

How it Happened
 
First Quarter | Winthrop started the night with an early 9-4 lead nearly three minutes in. The Bulldogs scored 12 of the next 19 points run to tie the score at 16-16 with 45 seconds left. But the Eagles then concluded the quarter by scoring the last three points.
 
Second Quarter | The second quarter was defined by big runs for both teams. UNCA scored the first eight points of the second quarter to take a 24-19 lead at the 7:36 mark. Winthrop would return the favor by going on a 10-0 run of their own while holding the Bulldogs scoreless for more than four minutes. But UNCA finished the half with an 11-4 to take a 35-33 lead going into the break.
 
Third Quarter | UNCA started the second half initially up four at 37-33 nearly two minutes in. Winthrop rallied to tie the contest at 41 at the 4:13 mark by going on an 8-2 spurt. Nyah Stallings accounted for half of the Eagles points during the run. UNCA then took an eight-point lead at 49-41 with thirty seconds remaining but the Eagles quickly cut the deficit in half to trail by four going to the third quarter.
 
Fourth Quarter | Neither team could create any separation in the fourth quarter, with the largest lead being two on three separate occasions. In the fourth quarter there were four ties and four lead changes. Trailing 58-56 with nearly two minutes left, Marissa Gasaway's jumper tied it at 58. Neither team scored after that, forcing overtime.
 
Overtime | With the score tied at 62 with less than three minutes of the extra session, Jada Ryce's free throw broke the tie and put Winthrop ahead to stay. Several plays later Gasaway put the Eagles up three at 65-62 with 1:25 remaining. The Bulldogs then scored for the final time on the next play but five free throws made by the Eagles inside of a minute wrapped up the victory.
