Eagles Defeat PC On The Road For A 4th Straight Win

Clinton, S.C. – Winthrop men's basketball earned an 81-71 victory at Presbyterian College, Wednesday evening for its fourth straight win.
 
WINTHROP (12-6, 3-0 Big South) PRESBYTERIAN (9-9, 1-2 Big South)
  • Samage Teel (13 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists)
  • Marquis Barnett (12 points, 3 rebounds, assist, steal)
  • Kobe Stewart (9 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, block, 2 steals)

FIRST HALF
  • Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead early in the game as Chase Claxton started things off with dunk from the baseline followed by a triple from Kasen Harrison
  • Nick Johnson's bucket inside capped off the run for the seven point advantage just two and a half minutes into the game
  • The Eagles led 15-13 at the 11:31 mark of the half when they put together an 8-0 run highlighted by a four-point play from K.J. Doucet who drilled a three from the left wing and converted the free throw
  • Yoro Diallo followed his own miss with a stick back which capped off the run and put the Eagles on top by double-digits
  • After a Marquis Barnett layup, Micheal Anumba drained a three from the right wing and then Kelton Talford scored inside to push the lead to 13 points with 7:48 left
  • At the 5:18 mark the Blue Hose pulled within three points, but the Eagles worked their way back to a nine point advantage at the half as Claxton knocked down a corner three at the buzzer to lead 43-34

SECOND HALF
  • Winthrop pushed its lead back to double-digits 41 seconds in to the half as Claxton knocked down his second three of the game
  • PC pulled within four points at the 13:47 mark after two free throws from Barnett as Kasen Harrison responded as he drove to the basket and scored
  • PC came right back with a basket off the drive from Samage Teel, but the Eagles answered again as Talford scored inside
  • Again, PC made it a four point game after Jonah Pierce scored after an offensive rebound and once again the Eagles had an answer as Harrison drove the lane and scored while getting fouled
  • Harrison converted the free throw to put the Eagles up 59-52 with 12:04 to play
  • The play sparked a 7-0 run that saw the Eagles push their lead back to double-figures at 63-52
  • The run was capped off by Talford when Alex Timmerman fed a pass to him in the paint and he turned and finished with a dunk
  • The Blue Hose made one more attempt to catch the Eagles, pulling within five points at 65-60 after a drive and score from Jamahri Harvey
  • Harrison came up big with a left wing three to lead 69-60 with 4:32 left as the Eagles held on to at least a three possession game the rest of the way

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Winthrop finished the game 10-of-20 behind the arc and shot 54 percent from the field
  • PC was 8-for-24 behind the arc and shot 41 percent from the floor
  • Winthrop finished 21-of-25 at the free throw line
  • Eagles were edged on the boards 32-31, as the Blue Hose finished with 13 offensive boards
  • PC had a 36-30 advantage in points in the paint and its bench outscored the Eagles bench 34-20
  • Eagles had three players in double-figures led by Harrison who tied his season-high of 19 points
  • Talford finished with 13 points while Claxton chipped in with 12 points
  • Winthrop made 10 of its final 14 shots from the field

NOTABLES
  • This was the 50th win for Mark Prosser as head coach of the Eagles
  • Prosser was also coaching in his 200th career game
  • Eagles are off to a 3-0 start in league play for the first time since 2021-22 and the fifth time in the last six seasons
  • This was the 10th straight victory over the Blue Hose and it's the seventh straight win in a Big South regular season contest
  • Winthrop is on a season-best four-game win streak

After back-to-back road games the Eagles return home on Saturday, Jan. 13 to take on Radford at 2 p.m.
