Eagles Battle Furman, But Fall 2-1 Friday Night

Greenville, S.C. –  Winthrop men's soccer fell 2-0 at Furman, Friday evening in a non-conference matchup at Stone Stadium.

Game Recap
  • In the 17th minute, the Eagles forced a turnover at midfield and quickly went on the attack
  • The Eagles moved the ball up the middle as Rodrigo Ferreira played the ball forward to Ricardo Ferreira, who played it back to Rodrigo as he took a couple of touch and then fired a shot from 25 yards out low toward the left corner that was saved by a diving Aaron Salinas
  • In the 21st minute the Eagles had another good chance as they moved the ball in transition as Rodrigo Ferreira pushed the ball forward, gave the ball up and got it back around the edge of the 18 as he fired a low shot that was tipped away by Salinas
  • Furman took advantage of a turnover in the defensive third by the Eagles as Christian Klaus won the ball, took a touch and then cracked a shot from 25 yards out into the lower left corner for the opening goal
  • The Paladins grabbed a 2-0 lead early into the second half when following a stoppage for an injury as the referee set the ball down for Furman about 30 yards out as Dylan Lane immediately played a ball into the box, got a fortunate bounce that ended up at the fee of Klaus and he scored from about eight yards out
  • Eagles finally broke through in the 79th minute as Furman turned the ball over in the offensive third, as Diego Candia won the ball and played a ball that put Grayson Woodard into to open space on the counter
  • Woodard took a couple of touches and after crossing into the box he slotted a shot past the keeper for the goal
  • Winthrop had a good chance in the 89th minute off a corner as the service came to the near post as Candia had a free header but pushed the ball wide of the left post

Notables
  • Furman had a 13-9 advantage in shots while the Eagles had the edge in shots on goal 4-3
  • The Eagles also had a season-high nine corners compared to five for the Paladins

Looking Ahead
Winthrop continues its road trip to the open the season as it remains in the Palmetto State for its next contest on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at South Carolina. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will air on ESPN+.
