How it Happened
Set 1 | The two teams began the day by splitting the first 10 points, with Winthrop getting a kill each by
Brookelynn Thomas and
Rachel McCollum and three kills by
Avery Jolley. The Eagles broke the early deadlock by going up 12-8 on three Wolfpack errors, an ace by Jolley and kills by McCollum, Thomas and
Karli Shepherd, forcing a timeout from NC State. The Wolfpack then quickly rallied to lead 15-13 on a 7-1 run. Jolley's kill and an NC State error tied it at 15 only to have the Pack eventually take a four-point lead at 21-17 on a 6-2 run, forcing Winthrop to call a timeout. NC State took a 1-0 lead in the match by scoring four of the last seven points of the set.
Set 2 | Winthrop began the second set up 9-6, with the majority of Winthrop's points coming as the result of errors by the Wolfpack only to see NC State go ahead 11-9 on the next five plays, forcing an Eagle timeout. The home team maintained a one to two-point lead for the next several plays until five straight points put NC State up 19-13. McCollum stopped the run with a kill and an error against the Pack and a kill by
Alicia Davis made it a three-point deficit. This forced NC State to call for time. Following the break, Winthrop then tied it at 19 on two more Wolfpack errors and a McCollum kill. This capped a 6-0 run by the Eagles and NC State called another timeout. The Wolfpack came out of the timeout to go up 21-19 but a kill by McCollum made it a one-point game. NC State went back ahead by two at 22-20 but the Eagles tied it two plays later on a kill by Davis and an NC State mistake. The Pack went back up one on the next play only for
Isabella Murray to tie it again on a kill. NC State made it set point on the next play but Jolley kept the Eagles alive on a kill. The Pack made it set point again and clinched the set on the next play, giving them a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set 3 | Winthrop began the third set up 7-2 on four Wolfpack errors, a kill by Murray and two kills by Jolley. The Pack then used an 11-5 run to go ahead 13-12. The two teams ultimately split the first 30 points as neither squad could pull away. Both Winthrop and NC State could only maintain a one or two-point edge before the set wound up being tied at 15. The Wolfpack then went up two points at 17-15, forcing Winthrop to stop the action. NC State seized full control of the set and the match following the break, taking a 23-15 lead and ending the match a few plays later.
