Women's Soccer Hosts The Citadel Sunday Night In Season Opener

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS THE CITADEL
This marks the 7th meeting all-time and the first since 2015. Winthrop leads the all-time series 3-2-1 and won the last meeting 3-0, which took place on Eagle Field. After dropping two of the first three meetings in the series, the Eagles are 2-0-1 over the last three meetings.
 
FOOT NOTES
  • Eagles are 6-9-5 all-time in season opening games after winning the 2022 opener with a 2-0 victory at Alabama State
  • Eagles return 17 players from last year's roster that saw action in at least one game, 15 of which played 11 or more games
  • Every single player that had at least one point in 2022 returns for the 2023 season
  • Senior Annabel Thomas led the team with 16 points with seven goals and two assists
  • She was the first Eagle with seven goals in a season since her older sister Allie Thomas had seven in 2017
  • She was the first Eagle with 16 or more points in a season since Krystyna Freda had 36 points in 2014
  • Senior Katy Feskorn was second on the team in scoring with a career-high nine points
  • Sophomore Chela Parris was third on the team in scoring in her first season with two goals and two assists
  • Junior Izzy Giarrizzi returns in goal after setting career-highs in goals against average (1.15), saves (84), save percentage (.832) and shutouts (4)
  • Giarrizzi led the Big South in saves per game (5.60), was second in save percentage (.832) and third in goals against average
  • This will be the 363rd game in Winthrop women's soccer program history
  • Spencer Smith is in his 14th season as head coach and coached in his 200th game for the Eagles on Sept. 25, 2021 vs. USC Upstate
  • Smith is currently fifth all-time in Big South history for victories (two wins behind 4th)

Winthrop will remain at home for its next contest as it hosts Western Carolina for a midweek clash on Wednesday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+
