HIGH POINT, N.C. –Third-seeded Winthrop fell to second-seeded USC Upstate in Game 2 of the first day of the 2023 Big South Baseball Tournament at Truist Point by a final score of 10-4. The Eagles move to 27-27 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• An RBI single gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead to open the scoring in the bottom of the first.
• Upstate made it 2-0 in the next inning on a sac fly.
• The Spartans then went up four on an error and a fly out in their half of the third.
• Upstate extended their lead to six on a sac fly and an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.
• The Eagles got on the board in the top of the sixth on Will Martin's RBI single, cutting it to five and giving Winthrop some life.
• But Upstate came right back in the bottom half of the inning by scoring four runs to go up nine.
• Brody Hopkins and Joseph Szvetitz combined to drive in the final three runs of the night in the last two innings of play.

Winthrop will take on fourth seeded Gardner-Webb tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. in an elimination game.
