Eagles Fall To Longwood Sunday Afternoon

Rock Hill, S.C. – The 2023 home schedule came to an end for Winthrop as it fell 8-2 to Longwood, Sunday afternoon in Big South Conference softball action.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Eagles got two on with one out in the bottom of the first, but a strikeout by Macy McCall and a fly out to right by Chelsea Roberson ended the threat
  • Longwood's Maryanna Guy singled with one out that started a string of six straight singles and a total of four runs
  • After a double steal and a walk, Kayley Devivi doubled down the right field line to make it 6-0 in favor of the Lancers
  • Eagles got on the board in the 3rd as KaDedra Temple hit a grounder to second that was mishandled on the hop as she was safe at first and Paige Rivas raced around from second to score on the play
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning Mackenzie Smith homered to left center with one out to make it a 6-2 game
  • Longwood added solo home runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings to lead 8-2
  • Ashton Vanhouse and Temple had back-to-back singles with two outs in the seventh, but the game ended on a hard grounder to second by McCall

EXTRA BASES
  • Reese Basinger tossed 5.2 innings of relief and finished with five strikeouts to reach 200 on the year
  • Basinger is the first Eagles to record 200 strikeouts in a season since Shahna Ashard had 217 in 2005
  • Paige Rivas extended her hitting streak to nine consecutive games with a single in the third inning

ON DECK
The Eagles are off until May 5-6 when they head to North Charleston, S.C. for their final Big South Conference regular season series against Charleston Southern. The series will begin on Friday, May 5 with a single game at 6 p.m. The series will wrap-up on Saturday, May 6 with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
