Boca Raton, Fla. — A five-run fifth inning was the difference as Winthrop fell 5-0 at South Carolina, Tuesday evening in non-conference softball action.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Gamecocks had the first threat in the bottom of the second as Aniyah Black singled to left center with one out and then moved to second on a two-out single up the middle by Marissa Gonzalez
- Sydney Boulware got a fly out to center to end the threat
- In the top of the fourth the Eagles put their first runner in scoring position as Macy McCall singled to right field with one out and then moved to second on a single from Mackenzie Smith
- Kaitlyn Tucker put the ball in play in the following at-bat but grounded into a double play to end the top half
- South Carolina led off the bottom of the fourth with single by Riley Blampied
- After back-to-back fly outs, Blampied stole second and then third base
- Haley Simpson worked the count full and drew a walk followed by a steal to put runners at second and third
- But Boulware stood tall and struck out Gonzalez to end the inning
- In the bottom of the fifth, Jen Cummings doubled to right to score Blankenship for a 1-0 lead and then Blampied doubled down the left field line to score two more for a 3-0 advantage
- Zoe Laneaux followed that with a single up the middle just past Tucker at short as Blampied scored to lead 4-0
- South Carolina added another run when the Eagles tried to pick off a runner and Ansley Lee was called for obstruction when applying the tag on the runner
- That allowed pinch-runner Olivia Cook to score from third on the play
EXTRA BASES
- Boulware pitched 4.0 innings in the game before giving way to Bella Roy to start the bottom of the fifth as she allowed just three hits with one walk and four strikeouts
- McCall recorded her team-leading seventh multi-hit game of the season and has now reached base safely in six straight games
ON DECK
Winthrop heads to Huntington, W.Va. Mar. 10-12 for the Thundering Herd March Madness. The Eagles open play on Friday, Mar. 10 at 11:30 a.m. vs. Rider and then take on Marshall at 1:30 p.m.
