Eagles Lose Final Game Of Series To Maine In Extra Innings

ROCK HILL, S.C. –Winthrop lost the final game of the three-game series to Maine by a final score of 10-7 in 10 innings. The Eagles see their three-game win streak snapped and fall to 7-5 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Black Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a groundout.
  • The Eagles responded by scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 4-1 lead. McKinley Erves stole home to tie the game at one, Brody Hopkins scored on an error, Joseph Szvetitz came home on a Ramses Cordova sac fly, and Nate Chronis scored on a wild pitch.
  • Maine got one back on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth.
  • One inning later the Black Bears re-took the lead on a grand slam.
  • The Eagles began to fight back in the bottom of the seventh when Erves singled to bring home Ricky Teel.
  • Chronis grounded out two plays later but Hopkins made a highlight play at home by leaping over the catcher, evading the tag to tie it up at six.
  • The Eagles capped the rally when Ty Hooks singled to bring home Szvetitz.
  • Maine tied it up in their half of the seventh on a sac fly.
  • The game would then go into extra innings still tied at seven.
  • Maine hit a three-run home run to take a 10-7 lead.
  • The Eagles could not answer.

Winthrop hosts Wofford on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the final game of a five-game home stand, looking to tie the three-game series with the Terriers after an 18-10 loss on the road on Feb. 28.
