Eagles Split On Day 1 Of Owl Classic

Boca Raton, Fla. — Winthrop softball earned a split on the opening day of the Owl Classic with an 8-4 win over Texas State and a 5-4 loss in eight innings to Oakland.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Texas St.
  • Texas St. struck with four runs in the top of the first
  • The first run came on an RBI single to left by Anna Jones and on the play an error by Peyton Rivas in left field allowed another run to come around and score for a 2-0 lead
  • Trailing 4-0 heading to the bottom of the second as the Eagles got their offense going
  • The first run came when Lilly Stump hit into a fielder's choice as the pitcher made a throw to first for the force out but threw it away and Olivia Martin came around to score
  • Then with runners at second and third Peyton Rivas singled to cut the Texas St. lead in half at 4-2
  • Paige Rivas followed with a single as Stump scored to pull the Eagles within a run
  • Peyton Rivas tied the game at 4-4 when she scored on a wild pitch
  • Macy McCall put the Eagle in front 5-4 when she came through with an RBI single
  • In the third inning, Paige Rivas came through with another RBI single as Martin scored for the second time in the game for a 6-4 advantage
  • In the fourth inning the Eagles added insurance runs as Ansley Lee provided a two-run single with the bases loaded
  • Mackenzie Smith made her first start of the season made her first start of the season in the circle and earned the win after allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts
vs. Oakland
  • In the top of the first Paige Rivas led the game off with a single but was caught trying to steal second
  • KaDedra Temple followed with a double to left center and moved to third on a wild pitch
  • McCall then singled to right, scoring Temple for a 1-0 lead
  • Rivas led off the third inning with a walk and moved to second on a single by McCall with one out
  • Little singled to right to load the bases and then Lee doubled to right center scoring McCall and Rivas for a 3-0 lead
  • Oakland got one back in the bottom of the third on an RBI single up the middle from Reese Ruhlman
  • In the bottom of the fifth Allisa DiPrima was hit to start things off and then Jen Krizka hit a two-run home run to right to tie the game at 3-3
  • The game went into extra innings as the Eagles scored in the top of the 8th to take the lead
  • Peyton Rivas was placed on second and replaced by pinch-runner Aleah Roy
  • The first batter was Lee and she ripped a single up the middle to score Roy
  • In the bottom of the eighth with one out, a fielding error put runners at the corners
  • Then after a double steal to put runners at the second and third, Maci Brown hit a fly ball to left that was dropped and the tying run crossed the plate
  • DiPrima drew a walk to load the bases and then Krizka walked to plate the winning run

EXTRA BASES
  • Lee entered the day with three RBI on the year and drove in five on the day including a career-best three vs. Oakland
  • Paige Rivas extended her hitting streak to four games and Temple has now reached base in six consecutive games
  • The third inning has been a big inning for the Eagles this year, outscoring opponents 21-2 and 11 more runs scored than any other inning
  • The loss to Oakland was the sixth 1-run game the Eagles have been involved in this season and hold a 4-2 record in those games
  • Winthrop now has four games on the year with 10 or more hits after it had 11 hits vs. Texas St. and 10 against Oakland

Winthrop is back in action on Friday, Mar. 3 as it will face Penn at 11 a.m. and Florida Atlantic at 4:30 p.m.
