Eagles Swept In Doubleheader Vs. ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, TN –Winthrop was swept in a doubleheader by East Tennessee State on the road by a final score of 11-0 in the first game and 5-4 in the second game. The Eagles fall to 8-8 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bucs took a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the third on an error, two RBI singles, a two-run home run and a passed ball.
  • ETSU extended their lead to 8-0 in the next inning on an RBI single and a sac fly.
  • The home team then made it 11-0 on a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth.
  • No runs were scored by either team the rest of the way.
  • Both coaches agreed to a ten-run rule in the 7th inning, ending Game 1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Winthrop took a 1-0 lead when Ricky Teel got Will Martin to come home on a fielder's choice in the top of the third inning.
  • Two plays later the Eagles made it 3-0 on an RBI double by McKinley Erves, scoring Teel and Cordova.
  • The Bucs made it a one-run game in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home run.
  • ETSU then reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double, taking a 4-3 lead.
  • Erves tied it up in the top of the eighth on a solo homer.
  • The Bucs won it on a walk-off passed ball by Brody Hopkins with the bases loaded and two outs.

Winthrop returns home to face the Cincinnati Bearcats on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in a two-game series.
