How it Happened

First Quarter | Trailing 5-2 early, Winthrop scored the next eight points off a jumper by Jada Ryce and consecutive three-pointers by Leonor Paisana and Ryce to seize a 10-5 lead at the 7:42 mark. Radford would end the run with a layup and proceeded to hold the Eagles scoreless for nearly four minutes until Frances Brown ended the drought with a jumper to make the score 12-7 Winthrop with 3:35 remaining. Tori Hall also tacked on a score off a steal on the next play, forcing Radford to call for time. After two straight Highlander baskets, another Hall score and an and-one by Paige Powell plus the free throw with 23 seconds left resulted in Winthrop entering the second frame up 20-11. Powell also recorded the 500th rebound in her career in the quarter.

Second Quarter | The teams split the first two baskets, both coming in the first five minutes as Winthrop led 22-13. Radford finally stopped the lack of scoring with a three-pointer to make the score 22-16 Eagles with 4:21 left as the visitors started a 10-2 scoring run while holding Winthrop to two field goals in the last seven minutes of the half. Radford's final score during the run cut it one point at 24-23 with 1:20 left. Powell would send the Eagles into the break up three at 26-23 on a jumper with 22 seconds left.

Third Quarter | Ryce began the second half with two free throws to put Winthrop up five before the visitors hit a triple. Undaunted, the Eagles scored nine straight points to make it an eleven-point game at 37-26 with 6:23 left, forcing Radford to burn a timeout. Powell scored five of the nine Eagle points during the run. Winthrop kept it going after the break with two free throws by Hall, making the run 11-0 while holding the Highlanders scoreless for more than four minutes. Radford ended their scoring drought with a layup with 4:35 left but Paisana hit one from deep on the next play and Ryce made a layup, making the score 44-28 with 2:23 remaining in the quarter, forcing the Highlanders to call another timeout. The Eagle defense was also rock solid in the frame, holding Radford to two field goals for over seven minutes. The Highlanders would score the final five points of the third quarter, leaving them trailing Winthrop 44-33.

Fourth Quarter | Winthrop picked up right where they left off in the dominating third quarter with two Powell scores plus a free throw to make it 49-33 one minute in. The visitors would get two free throws but Hall made one down low to push the lead back to 16. After another Radford score, Ryce nailed a jumper and Shamyjha Price got a layup coming out of a timeout to make it 55-37 Winthrop with 5:28 left. Winthrop again held the Highlanders to zero points for nearly four minutes before the opposition scored with 3:53 left. Ryce and Powell answered with a combined three free throws. Powell's free throw gave Winthrop their largest lead of the day at 19 points with 2:08 left. Radford would end the contest by scoring eight of the last ten points to make the final score 60-48.
