How it Happened

First Quarter | Winthrop trailed 9-0 to start the game before Paige Powell got the Eagles on the board at the 4:36 mark. The Panthers would get two more scores and held the Eagles to no field goals for the rest of the quarter. Winthrop's only point after Powell's score was a free throw by Jada Ryce with 45 seconds left, leaving Winthrop down 13-3 at the end of the quarter.

Second Quarter | The Eagles exploded in the second quarter, outscoring High Point 21-7 and was really split into two runs. The first run was a 14-4 run to seize an 18-17 lead at the 4:11 mark. Shamyjha Price led the way by scoring six of the Eagles 14 points during the run. After the Panthers took a 20-18 lead on a three-pointer, a 6-0 run by the Eagles to conclude the frame resulted in a surprising 24-20 lead at the half. Ryce capped the run with a score with four seconds left.

Third Quarter | The teams went back-and-forth through the first half of the third quarter with Winthrop taking a 30-24 lead on a free throw by Price with 5:38 remaining. But a 6-2 run by the Panthers left Winthrop up by a point, 32-31 at the end of the third.

Fourth Quarter | High Point picked up right where they left off to start the fourth quarter by going on a 6-2 run to take a 38-34 lead with 6:15 left. But the Eagles tied it at 38 on free throws by Powell and a jumper by Tori Hall with 5:17 left. The Panthers then seized the lead at 45-40 with 3:11 left with a 7-2 run. However Winthrop was not done. A three-pointer by Leonor Paisana, a jumper by Hall tied it at 45 with 1:27 left. The Panthers took a one-point lead on a free throw on the next play but Price's jumper put Winthrop back in the lead with 34 seconds remaining. The final 20 seconds was one of the most entertaining finishes that Winthrop has been a part of this season. Following Price's go-ahead score, High Point called for time and after the stoppage of play, Hall blocked HPU's shot out of bounds, still giving them possession with nine seconds to go. After another Panther timeout, Hall fouled the Panthers with five seconds left and they made both free throws for a 48-47 lead. Winthrop then called a timeout to set up one final play. Price's winning score with two seconds left was blocked and High Point ran out the remaining time to win it by a single point on their Senior Day.
