Eagles Hold On For Overtime Win Over Camels

Rock Hill, S.C. – Kasen Harrison and Sin'Cere McMahon combined for 46 points to help lead Winthrop to a 95-93 overtime victory over Campbell, Wednesday evening in the Winthrop Coliseum.
 
WINTHROP (14-16, 9-8 Big South) CAMPBELL (13-16, 8-9 Big South)
  • Ricky Clemons (34 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals)
  • Anthony Dell'orso (23 points, 7 rebounds, 1 steal)
  • Jay Pal (11 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks)

FIRST HALF
  • The game was back and forth in the early minutes and then Campbell grabbed a 9-5 lead after a three from Gediminas Mokseckas and a free throws from Jay Pal
  • Winthrop responded with an 8-0 run that started with Kasen Harrison finding Chase Claxton for a basket at the rim and then Harrison dropping in a three
  • Cory Hightower capped off the run with two free throws
  • The teams traded leads over the next three minutes until Campbell went on a 10-0 started by a Ricky Clemons three
  • The lead grew to as much 11 for Campbell with 4:48 left in the half after Laurynas Vaistaras scored off a drive
  • The Eagles made a run to end the half and make it a four-point game at the break, 35-31

SECOND HALF
  • Campbell opened the second half with a three from Pal, but Harrison answered it with a three of his own to start an 8-0 run to retake the lead at 39-38
  • The game remained tight until the 10:10 mark when the Eagles jumped out to a 61-56 lead after a fade away jumper by Kelton Talford in the lane
  • Winthrop even pushed its lead to nine points at 66-57 with 7:20 left, forcing a Campbell timeout
  • It was a 5-0 spurt that led to the timeout as Harrison drilled another three and then off a turnover on the break Sin'Cere McMahon found Talford for a big slam
  • Out of the timeout Campbell hit back-to-back threes from Anthony Dell'orso and it was back to a single possession game
  • The Eagles led 78-75 with 52 seconds left when Clemons drove but the shot was blocked by Chase Claxton only to have Pal follow the miss with a dunk
  • Pal then made a short jumper in the paint with nine seconds left
  • On the ensuing possession Harrison drove to the rim and kicked a pass out to McMahon in the corner as he knocked down the three while getting fouled and completed the four-point play for and 82-79 lead with four seconds left
  • Campbell called timeout to draw up a play and executed it as the inbound came to Pal, who then passed the ball back to Clemons who let a three fly from 40 feet that dropped in with .9 seconds left to tie the game and force overtime

OVERTIME
  • Clemons scored off the drive to open the scoring in overtime
  • McMahon answered with a drive and score himself and was fouled as he completed the three-point play for an 85-84 lead
  • Clemons answered with another score off the drive
  • With Campbell leading 89-88, Toneari Lane missed a three but Xavier McKelvy elevated for the offensive board and quickly laid it in for the lead
  • McMahon made two free throws with 11 seconds to play to lead 94-91
  • Campbell's Dell'orso missed a three and Clemons boarded the miss and scored but there was .1 second left on the clock as the Eagles led 94-93

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Winthrop finished the game shooting 50 percent while Campbell shot 60 percent from the floor
  • Eagles were 11-for-25 from three while Campbell finished 7-for-17
  • Campbell was 20-for-26 from the line while the Eagles were 26-for-31
  • The Camels won the battle on the glass 35-22
  • The teams combined for 84 points in the paint as Campbell had 48
  • Harrison led the Eagles as he tied his career-high of 24 points after going 7-for-15 from the floor and 6-for-6 from three
  • McMahon finished 11-for-11 at the foul line and finished with 22 points
  • Clemons led all scorers in a losing effort with 34 points 

NOTABLES
  • This was the 10th straight victory over the Camels and the 9th straight at the Winthrop Coliseum
  • For the game there were a total of 19 lead changes and the score was tied 12 times
  • Winthrop has now hit 11 or more threes in three straight games
  • Talford scored 19 points and hauled in 12 rebounds for his 10th double-double of his career
  • In 48 meetings all-time, this was just the second time the Eagles and Camels played an overtime game

Eagles wrap-up the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 25 when they host High Point at 2 p.m. Prior to the game will be a senior recognition.
