Eagles Fall To Nevada, Defeat N.C. A&T Saturday at Winthrop Eagle Classic

Rock Hill, S.C. — Winthrop softball split on its final day of the Winthrop Eagle Classic with a 7-2 win over North Carolina A&T and a 1-0 loss to Nevada.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Nevada
  • Nevada struck with the only run of the game in the top of the first as Chelie Senini walked to lead off the game, stole second and scored on a double to left center by Gabby Herrera
  • The Eagles got something going in the third inning as Peyton Rivas led off with an infield single
  • After being sacrificed to second by Olivia Martin, Paige Rivas walked
  • KaDedra Temple loaded the bases on an infield single
  • Macy McCall hit into a force out at home plate and then Kaitlyn Tucker struck out to end the threat
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Peyton Rivas singled to lead off, stole second to get into scoring position and moved to third on a wild pitch
  • Paige Rivas followed with a walk but a Temple grounded out and McCall lined out to end the inning
  • Reese Basinger tossed a complete game allowing the one run on six hits with three walks and 12 strikeouts
vs. N.C. A&T
  • Winthrop struck first in the bottom of the third inning as Paige Rivas singled up the middle to get things started
  • With one out, Paige Rivas stole second and then a single by McCall put runners at the corners
  • After McCall stole second, Kaylyn Little stepped in and came through with her first collegiate base hit in the form of a three-run blast to left
  • The Aggies made it a one run game in the fifth as Jai Deese led off with a double and two batters later Dezianna Patmon hit a two-run homerun to center
  • The Eagles immediately answered in the bottom half of the fifth as Tucker came through with an RBI double to right center and then Mackenzie Smith singled on a line shot off the pitcher that drove in Tucker to lead 5-2
  • N.C. A&T threatened in the top of the sixth as it loaded the bases with one out but Bella Roy was able to work out of it with a force out at home and then struck out Patmon looking to end the threat
  • Winthrop added insurance in the bottom of the sixth as KaDedra Temple hit a two-run shot to left to lead 7-2
  • Aggies loaded the bases again but Roy got out of the jam again with a force out and a foul out
EXTRA BASES
  • Sydney Boulware tossed 5.0 innings vs. N.C. A&T allowing two runs on five hits with a walk and eight strikeouts to improve to 4-0 on the year
  • Roy tossed two innings of relief against the Aggies to earn the save as she allowed no runs on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts
  • Paige Rivas and Peyton Rivas each finished with three hits vs. N.C. A&T while Peyton Rivas finished the day with five hits
  • Both are now leading the team in batting average as Paige Rivas leads at .450 and Peyton Rivas is batting .438
  • Basinger reached 10-plus strikeouts in a game for the second time this season, finishing with 12 against Nevada
  • Paige Rivas extended her streak of reaching base to seven games

Winthrop is back in action Feb. 24-26 when it hosts the Winthrop Garnet & Gold Classic. The Eagles open on Friday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. against Harvard and will then play North Carolina Central at 5 p.m.
