How it Happened
Set 1 | The first set was close throughout. Tied at 11, the Bulldogs scored eight of the next 13 points to take a 19-16 lead, forcing a Winthrop timeout. But the Eagles answered right back, as they closed out the opening stanza with a big 9-3 finish.
Karli Shepherd's kill gave Winthrop a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set 2 | Up 7-6, Winthrop scored five straight points to take a 12-6 lead in the second set. Shepherd's two kills led the Eagles during the small rally. The Eagles would eventually seize their largest lead of the set a few plays later at 17-10 following a UNCA error and again at 19-12 following two straight kills by
Avery Jolley. The Bulldogs would then cut it to a four-point deficit at 22-18 but the Eagles scored three straight points to go up 2-0 in the match.
Set 3 | The third and final set was largely all Winthrop. Ahead 5-3 with
Brookelynn Thomas notching four of the Eagles early five points, Winthrop exploded with a huge 15-6 run to take a commanding 20-9 lead. UNCA then fought back with a big 11-4 run of their own to make things interesting at 24-20. But an error by the Bulldogs ended the match on the next play.
