Rock Hill, S.C. – Coming off twin sweeps of Presbyterian and Charleston Southern last week to put the Eagles into sole possession of second place in the Big South standings, Winthrop Volleyball (9-11, 8-1 Big South) travels to Radford and High Point to start a four-match road trip.
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS RADFORD
This will be the 76
th meeting between the programs, with Winthrop leading the series 38-37 and has won the last eight meetings with Radford. The first meeting was on Oct. 12, 1985, a rare doubleheader, with the Eagles taking both matches 2-0. The series has been defined by both teams going on long stretches of dominance over the other, as the Highlanders went on to win 24 of the next 31 matches from Oct. 23, 1985 to Nov. 21, 2022, taking a 24-9 lead in the series. Winthrop then went on a long run, taking the next 18 matches from Radford. The Highlanders struck back by winning 13 of the next 16 meetings from Oct. 22, 2010 to Nov. 17, 2018. But since then, it has been all Eagles, with the Eagles winning the last eight matches vs. the Highlanders, starting on Oct. 19, 2019 with a 3-1 victory at home. The Eagles defeated Radford on Sep. 30 by a final score of 3-1 in Rock Hill.
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS HIGH POINT
This will be the 66
th meeting between the programs, with Winthrop leading the series 39-26 but have lost the last seven matches with High Point. Winthrop's last win in the series was 3-0 on Oct. 18, 2019 in Rock Hill. The first meeting was in 1975 with High Point winning 2-1 on the way to capturing the first seven matchups in the series. The Eagles notched their first ever victory over the Panthers on Sep. 24, 1979 by a final score of 2-0 and won the re-match a month later on Nov. 15, also by a 2-0 count. The victory on Sep. 24 started a run of total Eagle dominance over High Point for the next 30 years, winning 31 of the next 33 matchups, including 26 in a row from Nov. 17, 1982 to Nov. 10, 2007. High Point finally ended their long drought against Winthrop with a 3-1 victory in High Point on Oct. 10, 2008 and since then the series has been all Panthers, with High Point winning 17 of the last 25 meetings. Winthrop lost to High Point on Sep. 29 by a final score of 3-0 in Rock Hill.
LAST TIME OUT
- The Eagles hosted Presbyterian on Friday and Charleston Southern the next day.
- Winthrop swept the Blue Hose by a final score of 3-0, putting the Eagles into sole possession of second place in the Big South standings and the sweep of the Buccaneers secured Winthrop's seventh straight victory.
- The Eagles are currently 6-2 in the friendly confines of the Winthrop Coliseum, concluding a season-high four-match home stand.
- From an individual standpoint, Riley Oglevie surpassed 500 career kills while teammate Avery Jolley led the Eagles with a double double in kills with 12 and digs with 14 in the Presbyterian match.
