Eagles Battle Duke In 3-1 Loss Thursday Night

Box Score Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop battled Duke in a 3-1 loss on the road, Thursday night in non-conference volleyball action.

How it Happened
 
Set 1 | Avery Jolley opened up the scoring with a kill for the first lead of the match. The Eagles led 2-0 fter an attack error and later 3-1 thanks to a service error. The teams continued to exchange points until Duke used a 3-0 run to open up a 7-5 lead. Winthrop worked its way back to a one point set at 11-10 and then 12-11. The Blue Devils responded with a 4-1 run to open up a four point lead, forcing an Eagle timeout. Winthrop came out of the timeout with a 4-0 run to tie the set at 17-17. Jolley had two kills back-to-back in the middle of the run that was capped off by an Alicia Roberts kill. Duke pushed its lead back to two points at 20-18 as Winthrop called timeout again. This the Eagles came out of the timeout with a Brookelynn Thomas kill, but the Blue Devils ended on a 5-2 run to take the opening set. 25-21. Jolley led the Eagles with five kills in the set, hitting .714 while Alicia Davis had seven digs.
 
Set 2 | Each team held a one point lead in the early going and the set was tied 3-3 following an Alayna Jansky kill. Duke pushed the lead to 6-3 with a 3-0 run that was stopped by a kill from Thomas. The Eagles were within one point at 7-6 and 8-7 as Duke tried to pull away opening up a 10-7 lead but back-to-back kills by Jansky made it a one point set again. Duke took another three-point advantage at 14-11 when back-to-back kills by Karli Shepherd sparked a 3-0 run to tie the set at 14-14. The Blue Devils continued to try and pull away but the Eagles continued to keep it close and trailed 21-19. Eagles trailed 24-19 and fought back to 24-21 before Duke claimed the second set. Jansky led the Eagles with four kills in the set while Sheperd had three.
 
Set 3 | Just like the first two sets the Eagles scored the first point. Duke used a 5-2 run and then a 3-0 run to open up an 8-4 advantage. The Winthrop offense responded with a 6-1 run to take a 10-9 lead. The first point of the run came on a block assist by Isabella Murray and Roberts and then an ace by Murray. The 4-0 spurt at the end of run started with a Shepherd kill followed by a Robert kill and Davis ace. Then a block by Roberts and Jolley pushed the Eagles in the lead. Duke tied the set at 10-10 and 11-11 before the Eagles scored four straight points for a 15-11 lead. It started with a Jolley kill and ended with a block by Lexie Vick and Murray. Eagles built their largest lead of the match at 18-12 after back-to-back kills by Shepherd that forced a timeout by Duke. The Blue Devils scored two out of the timeout but kills by Jansky and Shepherd pushed the lead back to six. Winthrop finished off the Blue Devils to take the set 25-19. Jolley, Jansky and Shepherd all had four kills in the set while Murray had 12 assists.
 
Set 4 | Winthrop led 2-1 in the early going but a 5-0 run put Duke up 6-2, forcing a Winthrop timeout. Following the timeout the Blue Devils scored two more before a Jansky kill ended the run. That started a 3-0 spurt that pulled the Eagles within 8-5. Each time Duke tried to pull away the Eagles kept the set within reach, but was forced to call timeout when the deficit grew to 16-10. Eagles fought back out of the timeout with a 5-0 to cut the Duke lead to 17-15. Consecutive kills by Murray, Jansky and Vick highlighted the run. Duke responded with four straight points behind three service aces to push its lead back to six. Duke pushed its lead to 24-17 when the Eagles continued to battle and reeled off four straight points to make it 24-21. The run was highlighted by block assists from Roberts and Shepherd and then Riley Oglevie and Roberts to force a Duke timeout.
