COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Winthrop Volleyball program was competitive in their loss to South Carolina Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened
Set 1 | Winthrop stayed close early as an
Avery Jolley kill tied the score at three. The home team then went on a 5-0 run to open up a comfortable lead. The Eagles stayed competitive and closed within 13-9, but four consecutive points from the Gamecocks stretched the lead even further. Winthrop stayed in it with four points in a row to get to within 22-18, but South Carolina took three of the next four points for a 1-0 lead.
Set 2 | The Eagles took an early 2-1 lead in the second set. Both teams played well in the early going and Winthrop stayed in the lead at 9-8. The Gamecocks took five of the next six points to take control. Although the Eagles did get within a single point at 14-13, South Carolina steadily extended the lead and ended the set on a 3-0 run.
Set 3 | South Carolina took four of the first six points to open up an early lead. Winthrop stayed close as a block from
Alicia Roberts and
Isabella Murray tied the frame at seven. Later, with the score tied at 12, the home team ran off six consecutive points to seize the momentum. The Eagles went on a 3-0 run to close within three, but a 7-1 run ended the match and the weekend.
