Eagles Head To Longwood Looking To Secure Conference Tournament Berth

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Winthrop lacrosse program finishes out Big South play as they travel to Longwood on Wednesday, Apr. 27 at 3 p.m. With a win, the Eagles clinch a spot in the conference tournament.

WINTHROP AT A GLANCE
Winthrop is coming off a 7-8 (3-3 Big South) record in 2021. The Eagles welcomed seven newcomers to the squad; the newcomers include six freshmen and sophomore transfer Krystal Beebe from Division II Florida Southern.

Winthrop had two players named to the preseason Big South all-conference team as Kimora Bailey was named preseason defensive player of the year and midfielder Alyssa Angelo was also honored.

The Eagles were ranked fifth in the Big South preseason poll and are in their first season under new leadership as head coach Kara Concheck was named to the post in January.

Winthrop traveled to East Carolina for their season opener and came away with a 17-7 loss, although the Eagles did take an early 3-1 lead. The Eagles then took on Kennesaw State on the road and took a 14-8 defeat. Winthrop then traveled to Stetson and was competitive in a 15-13 loss before a 20-9 netural-site loss to Davidson. The Eagles then won their first game of the season against Youngstown State at Eagle Field leading into a loss against Virginia Tech.

Winthrop headed to Conway, S.C. for a non-conference matchup against Coastal Carolina before finishing their non-conference schedule with Elon. The Eagles began their conference slate against Gardner-Webb before traveling to Buies Creek to take on Campbell.

They then returned home for a matchup against High Point before notching their first Big South victory over Radford. The Eagles then made it two in a row with a road win over Presbyterian before an overtime loss against Furman and the home finale against Mercer. The team's road victory over Wofford put them in prime position to secure the sixth seed in the conference tournament.

SCOUTING LONGWOOD
The Longwood Lancers are 5-11 (2-6 Big South). Last time out, they fell to Gardner-Webb on the road by a score of 15-11.

Wednesday's matchup is the 11th all-time between the teams with Winthrop having won seven of the past ten matchups, including a 17-7 victory on Apr. 21, 2021.
