CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Winthrop women's basketball program lost to Presbyterian in the opening round of the 2022 Hercules Tires Big South Women's Basketball Championship Tuesday afternoon.
Winthrop (6-24, 4-14) | Presbyterian (12-17, 6-12)
Mar. 1, 2022 | Bojangles Coliseum
Presbyterian 65, Winthrop 60
How it Happened
First Quarter |
Sydney Hunter notched the opening points of the game for the Eagles before the Blue Hose drained their first three pointer of the afternoon. Presbyterian then used a 7-1 run to take a 9-3 lead, which was ended by a
Myra Strickland layup. Both teams then scored twice and
J'Mani Ingram's layup with 49 seconds left in the period sliced the Blue Hose lead to one. The teams traded baskets once again to end the quarter; the Eagles were down two.
Second Quarter | Winthrop used stifling defense, much like their first matchup against Presbyterian, to stay in the game. A
Luka Malinka three pointer with just less than six minutes to play in the quarter gave the Eagles a 21-20 lead. From there, a 6-2 run, capped off by another Ingram basket, saw Winthrop take a six-point lead with less than three minutes until halftime. The Blue Hose closed within one on a layup, but two
Antoaneta Alexe free throws with 20 seconds left gave the Eagles a three-point lead heading into the halftime break.
Third Quarter | Consecutive buckets from Ingram stretched the Winthrop lead to seven early in the third quarter, and it looked as if the Eagles were on the verge of breaking the game open. Although the teams went back and forth from there, a Malinka three pointer kept the lead at 40-34 and a
Sierra Hunter layup a short time later gave Winthrop a five-point lead. However, the Eagles would not score again as the Blue Hose went on an 8-0 run to take a three-point advantage into the final stanza.
Fourth Quarter | Presbyterian quickly stretched their lead to seven points with seven minutes to play.
Leonor Paisana closed the gap to five on a short jumper, but the Blue Hose kept their foot on the gas and took a double-digit lead with 5:42 left in the contest. The Eagles then cut the deficit to six on two occasions and a Strickland jumper with two and a half minutes to go got Winthrop within just four points. Trailing 61-57, the Eagles were unable to mount one last comeback as Presbyterian scored the next four points. Strickland banked in a three pointer with three seconds left to provide the final margin.
