ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Winthrop women's basketball program had another difficult evening Tuesday night inside the Winthrop Coliseum as they fell to USC Upstate.
Winthrop (4-17, 2-8) | USC Upstate (17-5, 9-2)
Feb. 8, 2022 | Winthrop Coliseum
USC Upstate 73, Winthrop 43
How it Happened
First Quarter | USC Upstate started the scoring off for the evening, but the Eagles quickly countered with a
Caroline De Klauman jumper and a
J'Mani Ingram layup. The teams went back and forth for the remainder of the period before the Spartans scored the last two buckets of the quarter to take a four-point lead.
Second Quarter | The Spartans went on a quick 10-0 run to take a 22-8 lead, but Winthrop would not go away easily and battled hard. A
Sierra Hunter jumper and another score from Ingram closed the gap to ten. After a three pointer from the visitors, an Ingram free throw and a Hunter jumper kept the Eagles within 10 heading into the locker room.
Third Quarter | De Klauman started the third stanza with a jumper to cut the lead back to single digits, but USC Upstate had a quick and swift response. Leading 30-19, a 10-0 run pushed their lead to 21. The Spartans extended the lead to 26 with five quick points from Chellia Watson and another Watson three pointer gave the visitors a 54-27 lead heading into the final period.
Fourth Quarter | Upstate scored the first six points of the final quarter for a commanding 33 point margin and had a 37 point lead just less than halfway through the period. A
Luka Malinka jumper and a
Sydney Hunter layup closed the gap, as did two layups from Ingram.
Noble Tsumas' three pointer with a few seconds left on the clock provided the final margin.
