Eagles Win Sixth Straight After 3-0 Win Over UNC Asheville

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop volleyball defeated UNC Asheville 3-0 (25-18, 25-9, 25-16) Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum.

How it Happened
 
Set 1 | Avery Jolley got the scoring started from an assist from Isabella Murray. After the Bulldogs tied it up at 1, Winthrop took a 6-4 lead off kills by Alayna Jansky, Brookelynn Thomas, Karli Shepherd and a Bulldog error. Thomas had two kills during the run. UNC Asheville scored the next four but Winthrop scored six of the next seven points, capped off by a kill from Murray to make it 13-8 Eagles, prompting a Bulldog timeout. Winthrop continued their run, scoring four of the next six points, including three straight kills by Murray. Winthrop eventually seized their largest lead of the set at 17-10 on a kill by Shepherd. The Eagles would maintain that margin for much of the rest of the set. A Thomas kill ended the set at 25-18.
 
Set 2 | The second set was all Eagles. Winthrop started out with a 4-1 lead on three Bulldog errors. After UNC Asheville tied it up at four, Winthrop rattled off a 12-0 run, capped off with a Jansky service ace. Shepherd had four kills during the run. After another kill by Shepherd and two kills by Alicia Roberts the score was 19-7 in favor of the home team. Winthrop eventually led by as much as 14 at 23-9 after a kill by Jansky. Murray closed out the set with a kill to make it 25-9, holding the Bulldogs under double-digits.  
 
Set 3 | The final set was mostly a closely contested affair. After UNC Asheville got on the board first, Winthrop got two service errors to lead 2-1. Three kills each by Shepard and Thomas gave Winthrop the lead to stay at 9-4. Two errors by the Bulldogs gave the Eagles an 11-7 lead. From there Winthrop began to pull away with a 12-5 run. Thomas had three kills during the run giving the Eagles a 23-13 lead. After UNC Asheville scored the next four points, a kill and ace by Shepard ended the match at 25-16.
