How it Happened
Set 1 | A kill by
Avery Jolley started things off for the Eagles as they jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. After a kill by Skylar Yates made it 3-1 before the Eagles pushed the lead to 5-1 behind kills from
Alayna Jansky and
Sydney Nolan. After the Bucs cut it to 5-2, the Eagles used another 3-0 spurt to extend the lead to 8-2. The run was capped off by a block from Nolan and
Karli Shepherd. Winthrop doubled its lead at 12-6 after a kill by Jansky. It was the second point of a 7-0 run, pushing the lead to 18-8. Eagles went on to take the set 25-12. The team finished with a .421 hitting percentage and Jansky finished with a team-high seven kills.
Set 2 | Behind the serving of
Rylie McMahen the Eagles opened the second set with nine straight tpoints. After three straight attacking errors by the Bucs, Jansky recorded back-to-back kills and an ace by McMahen made it 6-0. A solo block by Nolan capped off the run for the 9-0 advantage. The Eagles extended the lead to double-digits at 11-1 after an ace by Jolley. The Bucs tried to chip away and cut the Winthrop lead to five at 24-19, but an
Alicia Roberts kill from the middle gave the Eagles the set 25-19. Jolley had four kills and Nolan had four blocks in the set.
Set 3 | Winthrop jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind a kill by Jolley and another by Jansky. It was a close set for the first 20 points as it was tied 10-10. A kill by Roberts put the Eagles up 11-10 and then the Eagles pushed the lead to three points. The set was tied again at 17-17 when Winthrop called timeout and out of the break the Bucs took the lead on a block. Eagles tied it immediately on a Jansky kill and then she put the Eagles ahead 19-18 with another kill. The Eagles were able to hold off the Bucs for the sweep, taking the final set 25-20. Jansky led with five kills and the team had a total of seven blocks in the final set.
