FEELS GOOD: Eagles Rally For Overtime Win At Upstate Wednesday Night

D.J. Burns Jr. scored a team-high 27 points to help Winthrop rally for a 95-91 overtime victory at USC Upstate, Wednesday evening in a matchup of the top two teams in the Big South Conference South Division.

FIRST HALF
  • Eagles and Spartans traded leads in the early going as Josh Aldrich scored the first nine points of the game for Upstate to lead 9-8 at the 16:03 mark
  • Aldrich ended up scoring 11 of the first 14 points as Upstate led 14-11, but Josh Corbin drilled a three to tie the game with 14:10 left in the half
  • Dalvin White answered with a three only to have Corbin match it again as there were three triples in the span of 26 seconds
  • Trailing 21-17 with 11:37 left in the half, the Eagles went on a 7-0 run that started with a three from Sin'Cere McMahon and ended with two short jumpers from D.J. Burns Jr.
  • The 24-21 lead with 9:18 to play forced Upstate into a timeout
  • Out of the timeout Upstate went on a 10-0 run for a 30-27 lead with 7:15 on the clock
  • Following two free throws by Mysta Goodloe, the Eagles boarded their own miss and Drew Buggs found Josh Corbin for his third triple of the game to cut the deficit to three
  • After getting a defensive stop, the Eagles once again took advantage of a second chance as this time Kelton Talford scored inside to pull within 35-34
  • Talford then converted two free throws for the 36-35 lead with five minutes remaining
  • A tip-in with 3:06 left by Burns Jr. had the Eagles on top 41-37
  • Burns Jr. scored Winthrop's final six points of the half for a 45-41 lead after shooting 55 percent from the floor (8-of-14 behind the arc)

SECOND HALF
  • Patrick Good hit Micheal Anumba on a cut to the basket for the first points of the second half and a six point advantage
  • Spartans responded with an 8-0 run behind threes from Jordan Gainey and Bryson Mozone to lead 49-47
  • Eagles continued to hit the offensive glass as a tip-in by Chase Claxton tied the game at 49-49 and after Upstate regained the lead, Buggs drove into the paint and kissed a jumper off the glass for a 51-51 tie with 16:16 left
  • Eagles trailed 62-58 after two free throws by Cory Hightower with 11:39 remaining when the Spartans reeled off seven straight points as Winthrop was 0-for-3 with two turnovers during the run
  • The run put the Spartans ahead 69-58, but Russell Jones Jr. halted the run as he dropped in two free throws with 8:11 to play
  • The Eagles chipped away at the deficit after Upstate went ahead by 11 with 5:54 left following a Dalvin White three
  • Burns Jr. scored back-to-back buckets including a three-point play to cut the deficit to six points with five minutes left
  • Anumba made it a four point game with a reverse layup with 4:30 left
  • Gainey missed the front end of a one-and-one as the Eagles took advantage with Burns Jr. scoring inside as the Eagles trailed 72-70 with 3:48 remaining
  • Upstate went back up by four after White hit two free throws only to be matched at the line on the other end to remain a two point game
  • Both teams scored on each of their next two possession as the Eagles had two free throws from Hightower followed by Talford scoring at the rim on a strong move as the Eagles immediately called timeout with 2:23 remaining
  • Winthrop trailed 81-76 with under a minute to play with Good pulled up for three but dished to the right wing for Buggs who buried a three with 32 seconds left
  • Winthrop trailed 85-82 with 10 seconds left after White hit two free throws
  • Eagles pushed the ball up the court as Good took a hand-off on the right wing, dribbled toward the middle and then drained a pull up three with 1.7 seconds left to force overtime

OVERTIME
  • Good gave the Eagles an 87-85 lead in the first minute of overtime after he made two free throws
  • Following an Aldrich elbow jumper, Burns Jr. got the ball in the post as he spun his defender and scored at the rim to regain the lead at 89-87
  • Upstate tied the game at 89-89 with 2:44 left as Gainey hit a pull up jumper at the free throw line
  • Burns Jr. came back with another bucket at the rim to put the Eagles up by two and then after a defensive stand Burns Jr. put the Eagles up 93-89 with 1:39 left with two free throws
  • Eagles led 94-91 with 17.3 seconds left in the game as Good hit 1-of-2 free throws
  • Upstate attempted to tie the game with a deep three from White but it was off the mark and rebounded by Hightower who was fouled with 1.2 seconds left
  • Hightower made 1-of-2 free throws to clinch the win

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Eagles finished the game shooting 51 percent from the floor while Upstate knocked down 49 percent
  • After going 8-for-14 from three in the first half, the Eagles were 0-for-7 in the second half until Buggs and Good hit threes on back-to-back possession in the final minute
  • Winthrop finished 20-for-31 at the foul line while the Spartans were 21-of-23
  • Eagles had a 34-32 edge in points in the paint and won the battle of the boards 37-31
  • Winthrop finished with a 49-4 advantage in bench points
  • Burns Jr. led the bench with 27 as Corbin had nine and Talford added eight

NOTABLES
  • This was the 4th game in seven days for the Eagles, who took sole possession of first place in the South Division standings with the win as they are 6-1 in the league
  • Winthrop has now won five straight overtime games against league competition
  • The win is the 21st out of the last 23rd road games against league opponents
  • This was the 11th straight win over Upstate in the series
  • Eagles are now 24-2 in the last three months in the month of January
  • Burns Jr. finished with 27 points as the Eagles improve to 8-2 when he hits 20 or more and is now 30 points away from 1,000 in his career
  • In the game there were a total of nine ties and nine lead changes

UP NEXT
Winthrop completes its three-game road trip on Saturday, Jan. 29 when it travels to Farmville, Va. to take on Longwood at 3 p.m.
